I have tried to fit some SPD pedals to a hybrid bike and they not seem to fit. Would these be a different size?

AFAIK unless you have some very odd crank arms, you've probably just got the pedals in the wrong sides, I think all bar BMX and some very obscure old road cranks, have the same pedal thread.

Pedals are left and right specific, as coffeeking says, check you're putting them in the right sides.
