After today's outing I think I need a FS purely for comfort. After fracturing my coccyx last year the hardtail stings a tad.
So I am after a Fs that hasn't got 8000" of travel for gnarlcore; Just something that will take the sting out the back and will be reliable.

Budget?
Test ride as many as you can, the yeti 5s are nice and so are the trek fuels (and have various price options), canyons if you want maximum value. Different fs designs behave in very different ways so test a few to see which you prefer.

And why people feel the need to say they might need a full susser is a major thing is beyond me. Ride what you want.

So you just want something for general XC trail riding by the sounds of it, good climber, good enough descender but if forum members try to sniff out bargains for you, you need to supply them with max budget info and frame size required.

For example, this is a good buy but only have small 16'' frame size left.

Got to try them in my opinion...some will feel firm and sprightly and others will feel plush and laid back. You won't know what you want til you try some.

monkeychild
speaking as someone who has back issues and just spent the last 4 years on a HT going back to FS has been a revelation things have moved on so much in 4 years .

you must have mates with fs bikes have a go on theirs and demo a few shop bikes if poss
Or say where you are located and for sure someone will offer you a go on theirs

Think it's still a horst link 4-bar, just different shock placement.

Sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong though.

Boardman looks much better value than that Merida IMO

Just moved from hard tails and fully rigid to an Anthem X1. Almost all of it second hand, came in well under your budget with full XT, hope hoops, revelations forks etc.
Can't compare to many full sus (Pace 405, Marin Mount Vision) but it s clearly the best thing out there 😉
The frame cost me £350, possibly all you need and move the rest of your parts over? Obviously this would apply to almost any frme you could uy.

Boardman is out of stock in my size (small) which is a bummer.

Yeah the Canyons do seem to be flavour of the month. The Nerve XC 6 looks jolly good.

i honestly dont think you can beat the boardman fs for 1k or the canyon nerve xc 5 for £1150. i have the canyon nerve am 5 and it's fantastic (but £200 more pricey than the xc and heavier). the build quality is amazing!

Anthems are heavy if that's a factor. Even the top end ones are significantly heavier than the obvious comparisons, Epic, Fuel, Spark etc.

Certainly can't beat Canyon for value.

I am quite fit, so a bit of weight doesnt matter.
I really cant make my mind up lol.
Not massively bothered by fox forks as i like rock shox robustness (never had a problem with them)

or maybe a suspension seat post and get measured up for a new saddle, brands escape me right now, but there are some that come in different widths/lengths to fit your sit bones better.
Or maybe a Ti seat post...
Just thinking out loud like....cheaper than a whole new bike that you may well end up changing the saddle on anyway.

Not that this bit will help, i did my coccyx several years ago, it still plays up from time to time and most likely always will.
Depends how much you want to change your bike, and its a fab excuse to buy a new one 😀 "yes dear since i broke my ass i need a new bike" 😆
