What are the options? Seem to be a bit limited

Sram Force 1 is the obvious one. I think they do an Apex version as well.

Shimano 105, swap the chainrings for a narrow wide superstar one.

Working well for me on the CX bike.

Any sram with a removable spider and fit a direct mount ring.

Last winter I just used an old 7800 Dura Ace chainset with a single ring on the small ring position. Was fine

Did want to put a narrow-wide on my existing, its 130BCD and only appears that absoluteblack do a suitable ring (for £60) but I don’t think a larger ring is going to fit on the inner of my chainset due to stay clearance, and the chainline doesn’t look great on the outer

Running an SRAM red carbon crank and a 38T narrow wide. I swap cassettes for road and cross.

If it was JUST for road, I'd run a 40T. System works flawlessly with Absolute Black 130BCD chainrings, but I had a bit of a fpaff getting one - they assumed I wanted 110BCD.

Any modern chainset will work fine.

Run a chainring designed for 1x and it will not only have the narrow/wide tooth profiles, but be designed to be run in the outer position but offset slightly so that it sits in the middle of where the two conventional rings would sit. Certainly the SRAM and Praxis rings do this anyway.

I used a normal ring and not a narrow wide amd chain never fell off. Just road use

I use two cx1 chain sets on two bikes and a rotor 3D on the other.
All work really well
