at the risk of getting banned from this forum - my wallet finger is getting twitchy and i'm looking for a new frame. the more "exotic" the better but I'm particularly interested to see any nicolai, santa cruz and yeti xc racers

I wouldn't call it a racer, but it's a Santa Cruz, it's full-sus and it's reasonably light weight

This is mine:

[img] [/img]

It's not that light (really needs lighter wheels) at a bit over 24lbs (actual weighed with pedals, not calculated) and also not exactly exotic. It actually climbs like a lighter bike (better than my hardtail which is a bit lighter) though - it's always seems to need a gear or two higher than my other bikes.

Not quite sure of the weight but feels light enough for a 140mm travel bike.

here's mine epicsteve but i can't match the quality of your picture

druidh - what model/year is santacruz that looks sharp.

shredder - did you build this up from a frame, how do you like it, how does it compare to other bikes you've owned?

The SC is a Blur XC Carbon - it was built up last July.

Weight? Depends which scales you use. The ones in the shoppe reckoned 23.5lbs. At home, it worked out at 24.3lbs. Given that there's nothing particularly lardy on it, it does make me giggle at some of the bike weights quoted on here.

Yes built it up from a frame only find it superb feels very very solid and planted. And I know it's said so many times but it climbs brilliantly. Other bikes ive owned being HL Turner 5 spot, Scott Spark 10. Its a keeper for a good while yet.

How about a Storck - they're pretty exotic, I've only ever seen one on the roof of a car in Edinburgh.

I've got an Ellsworth Truth that is a fairly light frame, but built with Pace RC39s and a mish mash of components still comes in at about 30lbs. My sprinkling of carbon parts and light tyres failing to offset dx636 pedals and an lx chainset. I'm with druidh, some claimed weights are laughable.

Can't get one of these anymore, and it's a rubbish photo (really must get a better one - quite a few bits have changed as well), but this is only 21.5lbs including pedals etc.

Cue the naysayers who don't believe you can build a useable bike that light, because theirs isn't. Though there are at least two on this forum with lighter FS bikes.

i love the straight lines of the asr frame

i think i'm too old for the "organic" curves of frames like the mojo and mine which is probably why i'm getting cold feet. still interested to hear from any nicolai owners to get their view but that's going to have to wait 'til tomorrow now. thanks all.

Wow! No obvious signs of anything really silly on there either - unless those chainrings are carbon? I'm just trying to work out where it's saving over 2lbs on mine (I don't think there's anything to choose between the frame weights).

That' actually part of the frame - you simply cut 'em to size. It can be removed & replaced by a 'normal' seatpost but folk generally don't bother.

Under 22lbs or so is definitely do-able - just expensive. Going by the actual weights of my bikes though I think a lot of claims for very light weights are likely to be inaccurate and/or without pedals etc.

Really Andy? What have you changed since I weighed it at Sherwood last year, it's lost about 3lbs!

This was a bit over 21lbs with the mud tyres. Now got a SID fork and a New Ultimate seatpost to drop some weight, should be 20lbs once it's not got some nicer tyres on it!

what lucky people we are that we can own all these lovely bikes. the op was written to avoid pics of dh bikes - not so much about the individual weights of bikes allthough this is intersting to see. at 15 stone the difference between my bike at 26-28lbs and the weight of andrewh's lovely yeti above is a decent steak dinner with a few pints to follow. i'm not the sort to eat fish/brown rice/water every day of the week but we all have our cross to bear.

i'm sure there's more to come - m

I'm heavier than you but despite that I find the weight difference between my bikes quite noticeable on the climbs. Of course some of that might be geometry rather than weight, however when I rebuilt my Epic with a couple of pounds knocked off the weight (mostly forks and tyres) I also found that quite noticeable.

I'll never understand that logic it's all relative, just because 'you' are heavy a lighter bike will still feel like and handle like a lighter bike.

Another example of this skewed logic applied to lightweight bikes is when people say 'I'd like to know how much it weighs when it's covered in in 3Ibs of mud'.

Bizzare.

kingtut -
i have never ridden a sub 20lb bike whether covered in mud or not so i can't affirm or otherwise the difference 10 lbs makes to a bikes weight. i find it interesting that ppl get hung up on the weight of components when they themselves [me included] could do with losing a few pounds. i guess however if i had the cash i'd have everything xx or xtr and not give a sh*t what other people think.

I know a lot of people on here posting light bikes, Andy, myself, Aracer, Dougal, are all pretty serious racers not carrying much of a paunch around! Dougal disappears if he turns sideways on!

Agree with people who buy a 6" travel bike and then fit silly XC parts though, that's just daft, if you want a longer travel bike, fit parts to suit! IMO of course.

I was going to say something similar, with the caveat that that was the case for me when I got that bike, and when I was racing it seriously rather than right now (not like I'm fat, just need to lose a stone to get back to my racing weight!) Of course I have the added justification that some of the events I do I carry the bike for significant distances, in which case weight on the bike is far more important than weight on me.

njee, aracer, i don't stand much chance of ever fitting in to the "whippet" category of cylcing let alone racing. even if i win the lottery and employ a personal trainer i enjoy food and exercise too much so it's a balancing act for me. the reason for op was because i wondered what bikes there are out there that look sharper than what i have - from a vanity perspective. not with the aim of building something inapproporiate that will only last a few weeks between rebuilds because it is built to save weight or that is designed not to break when you throw yourself off a proper mountain [they are a bit thin on the ground here in the thames valley].

still no nicolai - shoud i be reading something in to that - good or bad?

That front mech looks a bit lardy for such a light frame. Looks like the whole thing has been done on a budget.

I like oxnop's ibis. Those white 5.1s (and fork) and a dark frame look good. Not decided whether the red goes with the dark gray though

" I'm just trying to work out where it's saving over 2lbs on mine "

lack of bar ends
lack of speedometer
lack of saddlebag (though I assume that comes off for 'weigh ins')
lack of extra stickers
It looks like it has those Alex Scandium rims on?
Integrated seatmast
Much smaller shock, no remote lever
Smaller/narrower tyres
It looks to brand spanking new, so no mud (or grease?) whatsoever

Maybe not 2lbs, but some way toward it?

"heavy DH bars, heavy DH seatpost, D521 rim rear and Random heavy deep section front, and good old coil-oil bombers"
On an NRS? Aren't/weren't they XC (race) bikes?

"Looks like the whole thing has been done on a budget"
What, of about £4k? (RRP)

Here's mine - Santa Cruz - I haven't weighed it properly yet (as I can't carry it far with broken foot!), but with a mate hold the scales and dropping it on them it came in at about 27lbs - but not really that fussed as it needs to be sturdy, rather than light for the single track of california later this year!

The worst of it is I haven't ridden it yet cause of this bloody foot!!

Bar ends 60g, computer ~20g. Saddlebag obviously comes off for weighing. Stickers not on any more, but negligible. Rims 70g less if Alex Scandium - mine are Olympic - but I run tubeless with yellow tape, which grabs a lot of that straight back. Still has a seat clamp, which tend to weigh almost as much as my post - maybe 50g saved. Shock and remote is part of the frame weight which as I mentioned is very similar AFAIK (without mine would be a lot lighter). Tyres are identical. Do you really think I weighed mine with mud on?

In summary we have 200g total for bar-ends, computer, rims (ignoring the extra weight to go tubeless or run sensible tubes with the Alex rims) and seat post.

Could be a little bit in the brakes, but not much. My forks, stem and front mech are all lighter. Where's the other 700g?

is dougal still on yon msc thing?

Had two options:

- Receive a 2010 one, the only difference over the 2009 being the headset and seatclamp are colour matched.
- Ride the same frame to see how long it lasts.

I went with the second option, saves me a lot of hassle with postage and stuff too.

Here it is, 20.57lbs with a number board.

Lightweight? What is lightweight? The meaning lightweight is different depending on whether you ride...XC, AM, FR or DH...seeing that I am in the AM category, the 26.8lbs that my heckler weighs in at is pretty damn good considering - brakes, forks, wheels....all of which will probably be heavier than that you can get away with on a 'FRO' XC bike for sure!

My bike will take a hammering, unlike some of the weight weenies on here, although VERY nice bikes.
