I have some Shimano MT40 trail shoes, quite comfy but quite a soft sole. I want to replace my old 424's with some 540's, better pedal, better bearings and engagement, but no support from a cage. Will the shoe flex to much? Would I need to get a stiffer soled shoe, more race orientated less trail friendly when walking, relying less on the pedal for support.

TBH, theres v little difference between caged and non caged spd's. The only difference being if you cant clip in, maybe if you have put your foot out going downhill, then the cage will support your feet better.

I prefer using non caged nowadays because the extra savings on weight

Okay nickc when I've come off and knacked something, doesn't happen often, but walking in race shoes is a pain in the a$$! Maybe the question should be cage or no cage SPD's.
