Morning all.

After some recommendations on here I’ve bought some MW7 boots to try and help with my cold feet issue.

I’ve got two pairs sat in front of me and not sure which is best to go with. Eu 45 and eu 46

I’m a UK 10 in normal shoes and my current mtb shoe is a really old Shimano DX in a eu45.

To be honest it’s a bit tight and I can’t really wear it with thicker or two pairs of socks.

I can get the MW7 45 on with a pair of woolie boolie socks and it feels ok if a little tight at the moment. The clear positron would be fine too.

The EU46 feels great out the box but I’ve got about 2.5 -3 cm between the end of the shoe and my big toe. I also think the cleat may be a bit too far forward on the ball of my foot due to the length.

Which way would you go?

Will the shoes give a little as they bed in ? Ie should I go with the 45 and hope it loosens up a bit.

Thanks

Steve.

Having loved the old MW81 boots, I tried some MW5 (same sizing as your MW7) and found them an awful long narrow fit. Also cold and sweaty, but hopefully your Goretex ones are better than the cheaper Dryshield.

Gave up and got some wide fit Lakes that don't need to be boats to get thick socks in, and still adjustable and breathable enough to use in UK summer. Not had cold or sweaty feet since.

I did as you've done and ordered 2 sizes. 8s and 9s for me when I'm usually an 8 in normal shoes.

The 9s were ok width wise, maybe a bit narrow with big socks but way too long. The 8s were OK length wise but far to narrow even with thin socks.

I sent them both back in the end which doesn't really help with your question.

I figured that the larger size being so long would have been a problem walking and probably slipped around when I was pedalling.

I bought some Lake boots in the end which still were great size wise but were much more foot shaped than the Shimanos.

Cheers both.

May I ask which model of Lake boots you went for ?

I bought some mx146 followed by some mxz304s.

The 304s came up new on ebay for not much money. I probably wouldn't have bothered with them at RRP.

the 146 are ok. They're more substantial feeling than the mw7s. They feel like a boot rather than just a shoe with a tall ankle.

They haven't held up particularly well. The toe studs snapped leaving the threaded bits in the boot and the soles pulled away at the heel on both within 400 miles. The outer material scuffs pretty easily.

They are really warm and properly waterproof though. Well, as waterproof as a shoe can be.

Water obviously runs down your legs into the shoe. I tend to use GripGrab gaiters over the top which helps a lot.

The sole is pretty good if you need to walk. It gives good grip in mud and on rock.

They're not perfect but I've come to the conclusion that the perfect boot doesn't actually exist.

Well, it was possibly the XM9 but shimano stopped selling those.

Are they MW701 or MW702?

I discovered when googling a while back that the MW7/MW5 have different fit for the 501/502 and 701/702 variants and while it’s not very well publicised, in fact I just assumed the higher digit meant the newer version, the ‘02’ version of each apparently denotes a wider fit.

You do still occasionally see new MW701 up for sale cheap (so I assume they still make these for the Japanese home market and a few make their way west).

Anyway apparently not all ‘MW7’ fit the same…

The were the MW702 version.

Im struggling to be honest. Got some lovely lake MX146 wide fit in front of me but they dont feel that wide compared to the current shoes I wear.

Dont think Ive got hobbit feet but struggling to find anything suitable.
