Got all my slx kit today and put the chain on it said to put the writing on the outside, i did this....

but then when i was looking at the packet where it shows the diagram of right and wrong it shows the chain with the writing the right way up when the chain runs along the top near the front deraileur..

mine is upside down here, does it make a difference or have i installed it wrong? i would just change it but i used the only replacement pin they gave me with the chain.

thanks for your help sorry if its a stupid question

No it doesn't matter, you've done it right.

Worth getting some of these:

As you can remove your chain to clean it or are extremely useful for a quick mend if your chain snaps out and about. It says 9 speed but in my experience they work better than the 10 speed offerings and are cheaper.

9sp links are not compatible with 10sp chains, so I have no idea why you think it works better?
SRAM 10sp chains do not use a "quick link", they have a power-link which is not removable - perhaps why you think it works better?.

Instead, look at 10sp KMC links - http://www.wiggle.co.uk/kmc-10-speed-chain-links/

your are right jono well kind of... on my chain most of them are upside down when at the top of the drive but there is the odd link every now and then that is the opposite way so it it gotta be right ๐Ÿ™‚

not sure about these split links not i might just buy a load of replacement pins when i can afford it ad just try not to remove the chain ๐Ÿ™‚

They are compatible, quite a few people use them and I haven't heard of any problems. Shimano 10 speed chains are asymmetrical, which means the KMC links are a pain to get on as they've been designed for KMC symmetrical chains. Whilst the 9 speed Sram power-links are easy to get off and on and have no issues.

I use KMC 10 speed links on my 10sp Shimano XT chains with no issues. They are a little hard to get on for the first time but with some use become easier.

You could, but they're supposed be to fitted once hence powerLOCK not powerLINK but you can get them off with a pair of pliers.

You can, but the SRAM 10 speed links aren't re-useable, whereas the KMC 10 speed and SRAM 9 speed are.

The SRAM 10 spd links are re-usable 8) I have removed mine many times to clean the chain in a solvent bath, they click back together each time, just as they did from new ๐Ÿ˜‰

A modified electrical crimper does the job perfect.
