Shimano brake olive...

[Closed] Shimano brake olives - pot luck, or have I fouled up?

I bought a pair of SLX brakes for the right side of £100. I was (and am) well chuffed with them.

I needed to shorten both hoses, and have done the rear brake first. I cut the hose, no bother. Tapped the barb in, no issues. Put the olive on and did the bolt up. When I tried the brake the fluid pissed out of the caliper. Bugger. On taking the thing apart again I found that the olive was totally mashed up. After finally getting the whole thing out I had another go with the olive from the front brake. No problem this time, and the brake seems fine despite having lost a bit of fluid. I will bleed and top it up in due course.

This whole olive thing seems a little imprecise to me. Anyone else found it to be just pot luck, or did I make some kind of cock up?

I've not had this happen before but I always make sure the olive is pushed right up inside the bolt, then I press the hose and the bolt into the caliper or lever as I screw it in, keeping the pressure on. Hoping it would keep everything level in there. As I say not had a problem before though

It's a pretty fair bet that the hose had pulled back out of the olive when you tightened it up, leaving it unsupported and easily crushed. You aren't the first to do it, and you won't be the last either.
Edit: I usually shorten at the lever end, less chance of getting stray fluid on the braking surfaces, and any air that gets in will only be at the lever, so is easily removed just using the bleed bucket.

I've used the instructions in the link below and never had an issue. Maybe have a look and see if there was something you missed to do?

I've never had an issue with the Shimano olives, although to be fair I've not used that many. Out of interest, my SLX brakes have banjo attachments at the calliper so it'd be easier (with less chance of fluid loss) to shorten the hose from the lever end.

I've had that happen before, I've done loads without any hassle then that one went awry. Seems to be fairly random.

Happened to me too. I had done shortening with new olives and putting in new brake lines a few times so got a bit smug. Couldn't understand why I couldn't get a newly fettled brake set to bleed. when I took off the new line I discovered I had mashed the olives at both ends. Replacement olives and very careful assembly worked the next time.

I used the epicbleedsolutions guide. On re-reading, I don't think I did anything particularly wrong or forgot anything. I must just be a ham-fisted, clumsy bastard.
