Help

I have just taken my Pinnacle Arkose for it's free six week service and mentioned the front brake was spongy. On saturday's outing the lever was pulling upto the handle bars and not stopping the bike effectively/locking the wheel/sending me over the handlebars.

I assumed that the brakes probably needed a bleed. I have just been told they are fine/road hydraulic brakes are nothing like mountain bike brakes/its the rider position on the bike that is why they touch the bars/the pads are contaminated.

This is my first drop bar hydraulic brake bike so I am not sure who is right or wrong but I am sure on my first few outings the levers did not touch the bars and I did go over the handle bars.

Any thoughts please?

they do pull back quite far, but should not come right into the bars

That's some list of excuses they gave you! I seem to remember that you could make any hydraulic lever touch the bar if you pull it as hard as you can, but of course you would never do that because they should stop you before that. If they're not stopping you contaminated pads could be an explanation (are they noisy?) otherwise it sounds like you're being fobbed off!

I've had three bikes with those levers. They're very difficult to bleed properly, but once done the lever shouldn't pull back to the bars - at least not without throwing you over them first.
