Hey guy's, i've fitted some fox float rl 130mm forks to my giant trance. I set them up for sag at about 25-26mm, this was at 80psi. I weight a tiny bit under 11 stone in my boxers. The sag was set-up with full riding kit/backpack etc on and sitting down. I'm finding I'm not using all the travel (about 110-115mm) so i thought i'd look into the set-up a little more. I've found that fox reccomend 65-75 psi for my weight.
My questions are:
-Should i be looking at having more sag with a 130mm travel fork, i've only just noticed fox suggest 32mm of sag for my all mountain/trail riding style.
-How should i set my sag? Standing up sitting down?
I've just had a little play with the pressures and at 70psi i'm getting 30-31mm of sag with full riding kit on sitting down. This to me sounds about right and i'll have a ride on it at the weekend but wanted advice from you guy's to confirm.
Hugh
I have just set mine up and found it reasonably easy. Didn't bother with kit as how much kit I take varies on the ride. Also sat down but only because it was easier and felt if stood up it would end up with too much sag as weight thrown to the front.
Looked at the fox tech centre and used the air pressure as a starting point then set sag from there.
Go ride, adjust if needed. I think you are putting too much thought into it.
Rebound was easy as well, just set to 6 and went a rode. Adjusted a little bit but only really notice a big difference if I move the dial more than 2 clicks either way.
any other opinions/advice? I have set it up standing up, i weight 75kg with full riding kit & camelbak. I've put it 85psi and i'm getting 31-32mm of sag. However I'm sure this was harder that what i had originally and therefore won't use all of it's travel.
Any other opinions on weather I should attain my 32mm of sag sitting down or standing up?
Hugh
The guide I always use is 25% (XC) to 33% (Freeride), so 32mm to 43mm. From there it'll depend a lot on the bike (hardtail or full suss), how you ride and how you like it to feel (firm or plush). As for how to measure, I measure whilst in normal seated riding position (getting on and off carefully). Sounds as though you're aiming for too little sag and aren't weighting the front end up when you're measuring. Once set, the advice was always to bottom your fork once or twice per normal ride.
Oh, and if they're new you'll have to ride them for a bit to start with. Until the seals have broken in the pressure to sag thing won't be correct owing to stiction.
30% sag set standing on pedals in "attack"(!) position I.e like your pedalling stood up, will vary for different year models of forks as to what feels good as compression tunes are different.
