can it be done?

Like a dumbarse i fitted a shimano chain without servicing the very muddy jockey wheels first. And yes there's no quick link fitted
Is there a way to do it? Maybe unbolt the mech from the hanger and drop it down then do one at a time?

Well the cage of the mech can be undone which hold the jockey wheels. Mech cages are generally 2 parts.

But honestly... Just buy a quick link and split the chain.

yes, you need to make the chain as slack as possible so take the wheel out and hook the chain off the chainset so it's resting on the bottom-bracket

it's not ideal but can be done, and be careful putting everything back together in the right place 🙂

thanks. I'll see how it's running and then order a quick link (or two)

proper "oh why didn't i just do it then" moment, would have only taken ten minutes

Yeah I've tried to do it. It's just really fiddly and totally not worth it - you won't save any time.

I must have missed the point. If you are servicing jockey wheels then you have to split the cage to get them out which means you don't have to split the chain.

Can't you just unscrew the wheels from the cage and take them out.

This sounds a bit like trying to take a pee without first of all unzipping. You are not going to save any time.

What's going on?! Why would you split the chain tk service the jockey wheels? Just pop the wheels off, one by one, pop the dust covers off, squirt in some nee grease and rebuild.

Chain removal really isnt neccessary.

Changed my jokey wheels the other day without even taking the wheel off! Slackest setting, undo the allen bolt on one, slide it out, new one in, do the other one. About a 3 minute job. Service would just involve putting the same wheel back in!

Yes, keep your wits about you and just remove the jockeys one by one and replace them with the chain running the same way around them, easy. I'm an experienced bike bodger but I would NOT fancy doing it by removing the inside of the cage then trying to put it all back together with the chain in situ.

Yes it's quite easy. Unbolt the rear mech and drop the chain off the chainrings. Remove and service / replace the jokcey wheels one by one.
