Jeez is it that hard to understand?
I'm struggling to understand the concept of being paid to do someone a favour, for a start.
Don't get me wrong, conceptually it's a good idea, people get rid of stuff for nominal payment, someone else gets a bargain. But, well, you can do that with the For Sale forum already anyway. That's it's raison d'etre, it introduced specifically to provide community members with a way of offloading unwanted gear.
If you were proposing, say, a swap shop, or some sort of credit system, or Freecycle, or suggesting that we have a link to make a donation to Air Ambulance in lieu of payment, then that's bringing something new to the table. But exchanging money for goods and services has been going on for a while. You seem to be labouring the concept that it's not "real" money so long as you give it a funky name, and if you'll pardon the pun, I don't buy that.
So that's why I was asking. I thought I must be missing something. But as far as I can tell you're just reinventing the classifieds, which might be somehow "easier" for you (though I don't for the life of me see how) but brings a load of new administrative issues. How would it tie in with the existing rules on reposts, or on the number of adverts of the front page? Can people use this thread to get an additional cheeky advert or is it either / or? What's to stop people abusing it by making fifteen consecutive posts, or reposting immediately every time a new page is due so that their advert is on the top? Or do we just say it's exempt, it's the Wild West, do what you like? The classifieds already generate more reported posts than the rest of the site combined, I can about imagine what would happen in an unmoderated thread. And what happens when a dozen other people all get ideas and want to know why their thread can't be stickied too?
None of these issues are insurmountable, of course. But it's a lot of effort for something I'm struggling to see the point of.
So, yeah. I don't mean to rain on your parade, I just genuinely don't "get" it beyond encouraging people to try and shift their tat so that other people might get use of it. Which if that's what you're doing then more power to your elbow, it's a good idea. Here's a link to get you started.
I suppose of course, the other explanation is that you want a sticky on STW just to drum up traffic for your Facebook page. But you wouldn't do that now, would you?
(-:
Quite simply.
There is a classifieds page where people daily sell items many on a 'clear out' thread where they sell their unwanted junk that is lying around cluttering their garage. You seem to think that STW would Ok to stick a post to another site that you have created. Sorry there is just no need we have a classified page for people to sell their unwanted items, they can spend the cash on beer, bikes, booze or charatee,
Mr Cougar,
Do you have sand in your vagina?
FFS i *thought* the mods were meant to be educated.
I started the FB group, someone responded that they didn't have FB so thought maybe a sticky "swap shop" type thread at the top of the classifieds where users could put essentially the freebie bits that people have but others need - for example teh front mech mount for a pitch that i need that is worth nowt, but i would buy a lad a pint if he had one i could have!!
Save loads of wanted ads and shite classifieds threads of tat - all sub £3 tat in one thread to look through for that bolt, that small piece of brake hose, that brake adapter, that mech hanger for an old emmelle.
But fair play, if it causes a company work, then obviously its not a good idea is it....
Oh and cougar - why would i be arsed about traffic through a FB page, o get nothing out of it unlike your traffic generated profits on the classifieds.
FFS i *thought* the mods were meant to be educated.
What on earth gave you that idea?
FWIW, strikes me one of those nice ideas in practice, but like Jekkly said is mainly altruistic and as a 'category' would quickly descend into a chaotic jumble, packed full of opportunists scavenging and requiring additional resource to control/mod.
**** it then
But fair play, if it causes a company work, then obviously its not a good idea is it....
I'm not a company, I'm a volunteer, as are all the forum moderators. So...
Oh and cougar - why would i be arsed about traffic through a FB page, o get nothing out of it unlike your traffic generated profits on the classifieds.
... how much profit do you think I see from that, exactly?
The issue isn't that it's more work, the issue (for me personally) is that as far as I can see it's pointless. As I've said repeatedly, it could just be me misunderstanding what you're suggesting, and I was giving you the option to explain. However, given you've just chosen to throw your toys out of the pram instead, I guess that won't be happening now.
47 facebook group members so far suggest that it's not pointless

Stand aside, Mr Zuckerberg. We have a social media magnet here!
JUST DO A JUMBLE! No mods, no Facebook, no postage. Just coffee, cake, beer and bike bits!
I will do 🙂 Hold your horses, It's a great idea, just need to think when and where
The thing with Facebook is that each for sale will be an individual thread/post in its own right, not everything jumbled together into a single thread like it would be on here.
People will be able to see what's available, what's sold etc. It's like having a mini forum, surely?
Having one sticky thread on here would mean you'd have to read the whole thread to see whether the widget you wanted on page 1 had sold - on Facebook the ' sold ' would be straight under the item.
so what your saying is that stw need to up there game and sort the forum to be more like facebook 😉
Oooh you are ungrateful!
I'd never use FB for trading anything even if it was "Pint and Postage" rates (which is a nice idea actually).
Perhaps it could be as simple as a tweak to the rules for the classifieds.
Why not just prefix any thread where you are flogging off low value parts with "P&P" (Pint & Postage) add this little convention to the classified rules sticky and the mods can set the standard value of a pint useful staring point?
I know I have stuff I'd be happy to offer under such terms and bits I might want to acquire in a similar way...
It would mean cougar had to do some extra volunteer work and he may cry 🙁

No need for a rule change just put it in the title and/or the thread for the item you're selling, that was Cougar's point it's perfectly possible to do it now without creating one big messy thread.
nice ideas in practice*
*principle.. 😳
Its a convention then for titling that could do with mentioning in the rules surely then??

Nah!
You seem dead against any change not suggested by the stw powers, surely the users should dictate to some extent?
Rob, you've reached some level of consensus with some users regarding the title idea, so lead on it, and see where it goes.

This.

We're not but it does not need a rule, a rule means we would have to make sure everyone sticks to it, if they didn't we'd have to warn them, delete the thread or even ban them. Far easier to let people decide if they'd like to add in the title that the items is as cheap as chips. Exactly how it works.
so thought maybe a sticky "swap shop" type thread
how is it a swap shop if money is changing hands? great idea in principle, but maybe drop the pint bit and just go for postage only, afterall you did say it was to send out unwanted tat
I agree with the mods. Nothing about this idea warrants a sticky. If enough people start using "Postage and a pint" in advert titles in the classifieds then it will be far more functional than one long long long long thread to sift through.
Now a "Let's put your unwanted parts together to create a bike for charity" thread WOULD be worth a sticky 😀
I think you need to go easy on the mods who devote their time to this site Rob, if it works on FB then you won't need a sticky thread anyway. Otherwise you're just talking yourself into a ban IMHO.
Also "P+P" just looks like "Postage and Packaging" so looks silly.
Only asked for a sticky thread for the luddites who do not have FB to be honest
Good grief Rob. Do you have to be such a pain in the arse about this?
Just add 'P&P' to the title of the sale on the classifieds and see what happens. That's how it all started anyway.
All threads used to have to be prefixed with FS and WTD anyway. If it catches on then we'll think of adding it is a function to the classifieds.
How's that for you Rob? Is that ok? Or will we get some more grumpy emails from you?
Generally tho, I'm with Cougar in so far as I can't really see the point, but give it a go. We may be wrong.
Right, I'm off to light the fire with a fifty from the classifieds profits 🙂

I'm trying to work out whether deleting that advert and sending you a warning because you've failed to state a price as per the classified T&Cs would be a) pissy or b) hilarious. Who's for "b"? (-:
How much is postage and how much is a pint round your way, incidentally? Seems like an unnecessarily complicated system, this.

This is how Mr Scum does it in Bristol. 1st Saturday of each month outside a bike shop and cafe. Every month for something like 8 years now. Just look at the stuff that ends up for sale often for not much more than beer tokens. It means you can barter and swap stuff too!

I cannot say enough good things about the Bristol Bike Jumble or the people I met there.
I had a Christmas clearout of my box of bits and sold eight items through Ebay and three more through an ad in Cycle Chat, those items (unused plastic shop pedals and my old mountain biking Lusso tights) I sold for a fiver, or just gave away for £3 postage.
This website has just started up:
sellmybikestuff.com
Get joining and advertising, use your stw user name to register. Simple!
judging by prices in bearnecessities post it should be renamed;
"Post and a can of coke from a vending machine"
I like the idea and my Wife has done well selling cheap stuff locally on a FB page but I'm erring towards specific threads here. I've got a fair but of tat that would be of use to some people but never for me.
I'm with the STW guys on not promoting it through those site though.
A big thread with it all on is a pain in the arse, they have them on Retrobike and I just find it complicated.
I might just give it a try over the weekend.
I like the idea of giving unwanted stuff away, personally I think it should just be the cost of postage and the £3 goes to charity, the idea that £3 recompenses your time doesn't really fit. It doesn't, so either it should be a value that does or the time goes towards a charitable purpose.
I have some frames wheels and components that are all in good nick but not very STW desirable. We have a churches homeless project that recomissions old bikes, I shall be taking it all down there I think.
Post me some tat - if it's not trashed - I'll post you a pint
+1 pictonroad save yourself the calories, feel good , help others .........whats not to like about giving stuff to schemes that help more people cycle
do what you want but if someone off here needs something then i will send it them for the price of postage and a pint for doing them a favour 🙂

I need a PS4 I'll email you my details.
you have to give him the price of a pint of homeopathic medicine for a PS4.
Bargain even cheaper then, I've got plenty of tap water.
