Is the second hand fork thing a minefield?

Yes, it is a bit of a mine field and you should be prepared to strip and service the forks. As in change the oil, however you can get really great bargains. I got a set of 07 Marzocchi XC 700 retro forks for £54, italian manufacture 100 to 130mm travel.
As far as I can see they work fine.
