I have a possible job oppurtunity in the Scilly Islands later this year.
I've sailed there before from Falmouth and had a rather boozy weekend, loved the place.

Has anyone ridden there? Is there any singletrack?
Awesome as the place is I'm not too keen on going if the nearest riding is a chopper ride away in Cornwall.

I have not ridden there, but visited many times. There are many fantastic footpaths on the islands which look like good potential singletrack, but having just looked it up on a map, I can't see any bridlepaths even on St.Mary's. You see loads of bikes on Tresco but very rarely off the metalled paths.

I would suggest asking at the TIC on St. Mary's

I went there a couple of years ago, and, TBH, I doubt there's anyhting worth riding at all. And if there was, you'd do the whole thing in 15 minutes!

hav'nt been there but have looked at it seriously from a potential ride viewpoint, not much going on it would seem.

its also on the cards that the helicopter will be moving from pz to newquay in a few years.

Been to St Mary's a few years ago. Took the mountain bikes to the island because we couldn't be bothered hiring a car (not even sure you can). Cycled around the perimeter of the island in a couple of hours even with a stop for a very nice cream tea. Can't even remember if there were any hills.

One good thing, you won't need to worry about security. We locked and hid our bikes round the back of a garage. Walked down to the pub and noticed most of the bikes on the island were just left in peoples front gardens.

Lovely place though!!

Doesn't sound like there is much then. Kinda what I was expecting.
If I do go for the job there I'll probably look at getting a boat so I'm sure that will fill my time nicely.
Slicks on the hardtail for fitness rides on the road and regular trips to visit family in Scotland with a couple of alpine trips thrown in could be the way to go.

I love the Scillys, especially Bryher, go once a year but stick to canoe / fishing / walking rather than taking the bike.
