Planning to go to rogate or aston in a weeks time, never been before. How do they compare to blacks or the cwmcarn dh course, which are all pretty much rollable?
Do I need a dh bike or will my am/enduro bike be fine?
Looked at some vidoes of rogate and some of the gap jumps looked massive.

certainly aston, obviously much shorter tracks though a bit steeper in places, certainly a lot more roots and much less rocky, slidey, slidey in the wet/damp

you can roll everything on an enduro bike, i was planning on taking mine there on wednesday

I think theres a race on at aston this weekend, worth signing up for as their races are great

main thing to worry about at aston is the weather.

if it is wet it is very very slippery, in the dry it is a dream

cwmcarn and bpw are both made out of rock so have no issue when it rains.

Aston is Chalk and roots...

In the dry, Aston hill is short, reasonably steep and good fun, with the opportunity for fairly "big" air on the more flowy runs (Surface to Air for example).

In the wet, I've still no idea what it is like to ride down, as i seem to spend the entire time sliding down on my arse/face (delete as appropriate!) and not actually on my bike..... 😉

(In either case, unless you are on an absolutely max attack timed run, a DH bike is un-necessary these days)

I used to go to Rogate on my Saracen Ariel and was fine...lots of different lines but not very long, worth pushing uphill beyond the road gap to take in the top flatter section before it drops in through the trees....most people dont do this and are missing out on about a third of a run.

100% agree.

Also Aston if its dry, rogate if its wet. Trail bike is fine for both.

If you don't know, both Aston and Rogate are pay to ride and you need to get a permit, which you can get online.

you can roll everything on an enduro bike

S2A has drops you couldn't roll, pretty much mandatory I believe.

Aston Hill has a race planned next weekend.

Originally going to be "Root Canal" but they have changed the track to take in some of S2A as well.

practice on Saturday, race Sunday. Get your entries in!

Back from aston and I can confirm its superb!
Got 8 runs in until the legs could no longer get me back up the climb.
They need to spend some money on signage, its pretty shonky. None of the runs are marked and the names on the map do not match the names on the website, took me a while to find them all and I still don't know what I rode, but it was fun and that's all that matters.
