Depends what you want, but you can't beat riding the chalk 'spine' over from Freshwater and up to St Catherines if you ask me - lovely place.

Stop at the The Crown in Shorwell for a good lunch.

best thing to do is pick up an os map. i grew up there and still ride regularly, you just have to explore. many great bridleways and nearly all well marked, better than most of the mainland.

from sandown you can head out thru america wood and towards the south of the island up towards stenbury, and st boniface downs. lots of riding on the up and around them. to head out towards west wight if riding the easy way is to follow the 'sunshine trail' - old railway that will take you all the way to newport or cut off @ blackwater and climb up i think sandy? lane and towards carisbrooke then follow over to gatcombe and bristone.

best thing is explore. so much riding and so little road having to link.

Just got back to mums in Calbourne, half a mile from Brighstone forest, bit wet today after downpour overnight but some great trails in there. If following the Tennyson trail just keep your eyes peeled for trails off into the woods and be prepared to climb back up and then head back down a different one. Saw one walker and 2 lads on bikes... usually see no-one and this is the height of tourist season.

I would start a "What tyres for wet chalk downs" thread but have come to the conclusion that none exist.

Have fun and enjoy your stay.

@ mccett
My folks live in Brighstone, I ride in the forest and along the Tennyson trail whenever I'm visiting.
Would be good to do a ride.
Mail in profile if you're about over the next few weekends?

@ pondyfzz
Happy to talk you through any route plans. I know West, Central and East Wight options. Mail me and I'll give you a number to call if you want details/pointers.

Cheers
Barn

pics from my trip, followed the guide, every part was sign posted. did get lost for an hour or so in shorwell, the trail seemed to go into a sheep field and just stop? but got back on track in the end. camped near chale in the end due to somone driving over culver cliff the day before we got there. had a great time

Nice pics, you had the weather for it i see. Lynch Lane just a mile from my old dears place - did you find any of the singletrack in Brighstone? It is a bit of a hunt esp as a lot of the entries are a bit overgrown but if you go back its worth an afternoon just playing in there and the climbs back up are enough to know you have done a bit.
