Went for a poodle on the downs today and after a cloudburst the hard packed chalk turned into an ice rink - no grip for tyre or boot.

I have a permanent memory of hammering down towards Avebury and losing traction

Clipped in A over E for some distance

I used to ride trail motorbikes around Devizes, and was happier in the winter as the ground was nice and soft. Falling off in the summer was pretty much the same as hitting slippery concrete.

You have my sympathy, when you lose the front wheel then it goes bleeding quick

Would ice tyres be any use?

Slippery concrete in summer, unrideable mess in winter. Ah, how I miss thee Ridgeway, bane of my MTBing youth!

I only live 10 minutes from the Ridgeway, but only ride up there a handful of times a year. Find it really tedious. Think I've done one small section once this year.

I love it as a commute route and the bunch of local climbs are all I have for hills. But yes, Death By Chalk is a well named segment in the wet.

I just remember it sticking to the tyres. Pretty sure I converted my 26" tyres to 650b+ to the point that they wouldn't go round anymore.
