Gonna check for tight links first but thinking it mightbe the cassette...cant remember when that was changed it has probably had a couple of chains at least. ..on 9sp and shimano so do I stick with deore or xt...

Worn cassette. Always the case when you replace a worn chain and don't change the cassette.

I replaced my chain not long back and it was skipping on the front chain ring. Changed that and it's fine now.
You can normally tell when it jumps if it is the front or the back so just change the one causing the problem.

Very rare it will be the front. worn cassette is infinitely more common.
