We're visiting Scotland for two weeks at the end of July, start of August. For one week we'll be in the van with dogs, mostly climbing but the other week we'll be mountain biking so we'll need accommodation to leave the dogs in.
Can you recommend an area that has about a weeks riding close by? We're thinking a coastal area be good to avoid the worst of the midges.

Scotland is a big place, be helpful if you narrowed it down a bit, what type of riding?
Highlands in july - no midges - unlikely.
Torridon is fantastic with lots of trails / exploring. North west is great around stac pollaidh also far north around tongue (the local shop does a great sticker "I love tongue").
checkout the developing mountainbiking scotland website for lots of recommendations

Something I'm interested in too, noted the other link ... so when is midge time, we're thinking of going in August, is any area worse than others? We have 3 or 4 weeks so will and can move around a lot ๐
Midges usually at their worst from early June through to end August, though this year, with a very mild winter, they will likely be out early. West coast tends to be worse than east but not a given. Areas without trees and with good wind flow tend to be more pleasant.
Some midges have already been spotted.
Some of the worst midges I've ever experienced were at Glenmore.
Either MTFU (with the help of some Smidge) or go elsewhere.

Probably bigger than some realise
