Hi guys, a little bit of advice is needed.
I have been running an SLX mech with Deore 9spd shifters for 18 months now. Most weekends I ride and over the winter it has been very muddy, however I clean the bike after each use.
For the last couple of rides the rear gears haven't been changing very well, when I adjust them so they change up sweet, they then won't change down, and vice-versa.
Do you think its just time for new cables as these may be slightly 'stretchy' now? or do I go back to 8 spd because I never seemed to suffer this problem in the good 'ol days 🙂
Cheers for any help.
Yes, probably cables. Why not unbolt the end from the mech and see if the inner is moving nice and freely in the outers? You might get away with just dismantling it all and giving it all a good blast through with GT85 and re greasing after they dry out. 18 months of riding is plenty for cables on some setups, though. These are cheap if you have a store nearby.

Wow, those are cheap.
I have disconnected the cables and they still run very smoothly, So I thought perhaps they are slightly elastic if thats possible? and thats whats causing the problem?
At that price theres no harm in trying, thanks.
Would be worth checking that the derailleur hanger isn't bent before you go spending money on things. Your shop will have the tools for this. That said, you should really have a new hanger as part of your trail pack. When I've had shifting issues in the past, I have occasionally used my spare (new) hanger to make sure that the one on my frame isn't damaged.
It shouldnt be a problem for me to borrow a mech hanger so I'll give that a go asap.
Thanks.
If they won't change down easily it's more than likely cable drag - a bent hanger usually manifests itself in not being able to hit high or low gears depending on how the bend went.. and probably bad shifting too to be fair.
£5 on those cables is a sound investment after 18 months on a set.
Sounds like mucky cables and/or mech pivots. I would clean and lube (or possibly replace) all the cables then attach your mech with a tooth brush and some GT85.
