I have just purchased a new bike and would like to run a dual ring with bash guard up front for all the obvious reasons. The bike has a brand new Ltd edition Raceface crank (Ano red sexy) up front, is it possible to adapt/convert this or is it a brand new component?

Anything else that will need changing front mech sounds obvious?

you should just need to replace the big ring with a bash ring, unless it's some hippy-dippy funny bolt pattern, but I doubt it is.

if you think the 32T middle ring is going to be too low geared, you can swap that for a 36T then get a bigger bash, but up to you.

You should only need to adjust the stop screws on the mech to stop it over shifting.

In theory yes, you can drop it a bit but if you're sticking with a triple front mech then since the middle/granny rings aren't moving it should need moving.

I found a double specific mech helped massively on my 2x9 setup but I don't have a bashring so the chain tended to fall off towards the outside which a bashring would have stopped.

I have a bashring to sell - 32T 4-bolt size in black. Used but not trashed. It's a truvativ one IIRC - £10 posted (email me if you want it)

1) Change your middle ring from 32 to 36 or you will be way undergeared
2) Fit a 36 bashring in place of your big ring
3) Move your front mech down as far as possible and set the stop screw so it won't move beyond the middle ring

what are chain guides/devices for and would they be compatible with the above set sup?

Chain devices just stop your chain jumping off - I think you can only use them on a single front set up. Completely unnecessary unless you are a downhill racer

no, most are single ring but E.13 do a double ring one, some others may also.

I do agree with the captain about the DH racer though. I have 22/36/bash on my evil and ride it just as hard as I can. I have never had a dropped chain. I've a suspicion that they (chainguides) come into their own when dealing with rear sus setups where the cainline and mech is being bashed around all over the place.

for the limited amount of DH that gets done, forks over 100mm, tyres over 1.9, rear suspension, big wide riser bars, short stems........ are probably overkill too.

pros: keeps the chain on when it gets rough
cons: weight, increased friction on chain

apparently you are changing to double and bash for all the obvious reasons!

I say that it's down to preference, and what you are comfortable with to be honest.

The freedom of choice is a wonderful thing!

As it happens... my shoulders are of a 'barn door' type width and i find that my 710mm Easton fits me bang on... if that's o.k with you?

The bash ring is due to my increasing confidence, genuine neglect of the big ring and combination of more technically demanding riding where i feel that it will be of benefit. Phew.

its your bike, build it how you want, then ride it where you want.
having said that your bars are far too wide - fix it and report back please 😉

Already got a xc/trail bike set up in the conventional manner.

Exactly why I went from triple to double and bash. Never regretted it

had the bike round Dalby at the weekend and didn't miss the old set up at all!

My Heckler came with a 3-ring RaceFace Atlas crank set, added a RF bash ring onto it pretty much straight away. As stated above, I didn't need to move the front mech position, just adjusted the limit screws.

I've a suspicion that they (chainguides) come into their own when dealing with rear sus setups where the cainline and mech is being bashed around all over the place.

Certainly in my case. I was dropping the chain on nearly every descent, despite using a medium-cage rear mech and keeping the chain as tight as possible. I added a Blackspire Stinger and haven't looked back since.
