Hugh. Which would you go for if buying again. Black or silver
I think i am swaying to black
The black ones are still in stock
Ahh bollocks, my silver ones came today and I wanted black 🙁
Am I mising something, or is this from Merlin actually a slightly better deal? If you need a set of course.

last years brakes not 2012's
They are the old ones
just been out with my new set, i have replaced them for hope tech v2s, got the shimano rotors as well, not ice tech
initial impressions
lighter than the v2s
they are a lot chunkier than the v2s, and i dont think they look as good
not as progressive as the v2s
BUT... much more power than the hopes, no dragging on the rotors, which i sometimes got with the hopes
levers feel a lot nicer on the xts
think i will keep them on for 90% of the time and swap back to the hopes for trips abroad
Is there a massive difference? Thinking of chopping in my Hopes as I quite like the grabby feel of the Shimanos I've tried.
also noticed shimano xt/xtr organic pads for £6.odd at rose bikes ordered 4 sets at that price
seems to be a lot more power with the xts, more solid feel to them, and id only just bled the v2s
dont get me wrong v2s are excellent brakes, but the xts feel better again
Ollie - black. The silver levers look nice but I think the calipers look quite cheap, particularly compared with the lovely CNCed Hopes.
Im glad I checked back in on this thread.Black ordered 🙂
Black ordered.
Mine arrived today. With mug 🙂
My wife asked what the parcel was and I said it was just a mug. Job done!
This thread is almost making me want to order a set for my other bike even though the brakes on it are fine.
Anyone from the new wave of orders recieved a dispatch mail yet?
First proper test ride tonight and mightily impressed. Crazy amounts of power but with great feel and modulation. One fast DH section and I was playing about with tiny flicks on the levers and the retardation was mental!
Considerably more power than the Hope Tech M4s on my ML8.
Used mine for first time tonight too. They're brilliant!
In a slight edit to my above post, to be fair, the Hope X2s and M4s both must have the same power as they can all lock the wheels and stop me very quickly. The main difference with the XTs is the amount of effort you need to put in for this to happen (as in not a lot!).
In the Alps I suffered slightly from finger pump with my Hopes and sometimes had to change braking fingers. I'm pretty sure that given how little effort the XTs need to give the same stopping ability, this wouldn't be the case.
Just ordered some in black, already got the XTR ice-tech rotor jobbies, no idea what bike to put them on tho. 🙂
Couldn't get the facebook code to work. 😥
I'm almost tempted by these.
The only thing that's stopping me is the potential Shimano issues in cold weather - calipers leaking etc... I really hope that it does not apply to 785s.
potential Shimano issues in cold weather - calipers leaking etc
Never an issue with my M965s...
My 775s used to firm up in very very cold weather, never had any of my three previous sets of shimano brakes leak though.
my 775's did the same, use to be rock hard once it got mega cold, very very hard to brake with too -
not had the formulas in for winter yet, but im hopeful they continue to be as brilliant as they have been through summer
the new xts look awful on the bars though - design looks really old fashioned and bulky 🙁
Two brakes, one mug, three packets of jellies, and my €10 PayPal refund all arrived simultaneously. Nice one.
Hmm.... plenty of fluid around the hose on the front one... that's not a good sign....
Looks like the black ones are back in stock- Mine shipped this morning 🙂
Mine did too. No more avid elixer problems for me 🙂
Mine shipped this morning, but no free gift in the bag 🙁
Did just get my rotors from rose with a mug though 🙂
i must say i am most impressed with rose bike's. ordered the 2012 xt double crankset for £130 quid along with new xt pedals and afew other bits and its here in 3 days from germany. Brilliant the new XT crankset looks bloody smart too 😀
Ordered a black set this morning and should get them by the middle of the week.
Will my Hope rear 160 adaptor fit or does it need to be a shimano specific one? Some people seem to be getting adaptors included and some not which seems odd.
I didn't get adapters, but had the right one in a box somewhere.
Hope rotors will be fine.
Cheers DezB but will the Hope postmount to IS adaptor fit?
Could do without having to order one if the one I have will be fine.
Sorry, bit late, but pretty sure it will (if you mean postmount calliper to IS fork/frame adapter). Mine was off an old set of cable pull disc brakes.
Did we decide whether or not the XT were sufficiently different to the SLX to warrant the difference in price? If it's just the free stroke adjustment I can probably live without it.
I think I prefer the look of the SLX's and I can put the difference towards some discs.
If I were buying another set.
Which I most certainly am not.
Which I most certainly am not.
Dammit, saying it twice doesn't make it sound any more believable...
On the M775's once the piston seals leaked the caliper had to thrown out.
I wonder if these can be replaced on the new model as the caliper can be split?

POSTED 16 HOURS AGO # REPORT-POST
But Plenty of shimano ones 🙂
Dangerboy
I've got the SLXs my friend has XTs.
If you don't need the free stroke adjust then get SLXs (unless you really want that 'XT' logo on your bike).
Someone mentioned something about different materials? No idea where that info came from but it's not correct. Both are metal and plastic in all the right places.
It's a lot cheaper for manufacturers to make products that share parts. It's only when you drop down to Deore that things become noticeably different - google some pics.
SLX vs XT the detail-
The caliper is exactly the same (different paint of course), both have ceramic pistons and both are 'two piece'.
SLX has a split pin and XT has the 'screw pin' pad retention. (The SLX caliper being the same is threaded so it could take the screw pin).
Same hoses / olives / bangos etc.
The lever bodies are the same. The hole for the free stroke adjustment is plugged up on the SLX lever.
The lever assemblies that fit into body are different.
The reservoir caps are shaped differently.
Different paint job.
And the SLXs look nicer.
Identical power / modulation / feel. Impossible the tell the difference.
Cheers
Looking at the lever assemblies, SLX will likely be more reliable in the long term... the slot for freestroke adjustment on the XTs is a likely candidate for play over time.
Umm, it's a screw
Still can't see a slot, cross head screw...yes
That lever looks awfully short! What's peoples opinions after using? Can you even fit two fingers in it!?
Can you even fit two fingers in it!?
Why would you want to?
One finger only but so much power that I had re-adjust my one finger braking technique as I kept over-braking!
Power and modulation is more than good enough to only need one finger braking - however two fingers will fit as long as they are not like sausages
Why would you want to?
My current brakes are kack so two is needed, but if theyre as good as people say maybe I will just have to use one!
Also, has anyone ordered when it says out of stock? What sort of times do they tell you?
