What are peoples favourites? 25k or 50k? Not sure what to get for Lake District riding. Are the "active" ones any better?

active ones are just splash proof and wear better, you wouldnt want to mess about with a non laminated one in the wet, they are a bit bulkier though. prefer 25k for hiking and 50k for bike, dont know that area though
cant help but mention i use my phone more for maps these days

I prefer the 1:25,000 ones in the wilds, as the field boundaries are handy for navigation, and I just enjoy looking at the things anyway.

All my dirty map habits are satisfied by the OS Getamap service these days. Computer porn, innit?

Explorer for me every time. I use mapping software but do resort to photocopying maps for the detail.

Map always in backpack but a printed route in plastic folder shoved into pocket.

Map p0rn FTW. 😀

Which are the best OS maps to use for something like the South Downs Way?
I don't want to have to rely on my Garmin when I ride it!

I believe Harvey's have the complete route but hopefully someone could confirm this just in case I'm wrong.

I just subscribed to the OS getamap service £20 offer for 12 months.

Whole UK at whatever scale you want, basic route plotting and can print centred wherever.

Not as good an application as some of the commercial ones, but cheap and pretty handy!

You can also view all the maps for free, handy for lunchtime planning!

I usually use Where's the Path for my map requirements, but do like a proper map so have ordered one of the local area, thanks.

I'm a bit disappointed with the OS Getamap thing - if you try and plot multiple routes with lots of waypoints on the same map it takes forever to load and then, after a while, you can't add anymore - you get an error and can't save until you remove some waypoints - annoying when you've plotted your coast to coast as far as Osmotherly. Can't find anywhere in the FAQs of Help that's there's a limit, but there bloody is.

And, even zooming in and out, viewing on screen just isn't the same as a fully unfolded OS sheet or, even better, two or more fully unfolded sheets spread over the floor.

I bought 4 x 1:25000 on cg's tip (thanks again for the PSA), I've got all the maps I need for the coast to coast now (or I will have when they arrive), so bugger getamap, it's pencil and paper route plotting for me..

What would be nice would be if the OS still did the Wainwright Coast to Coast on a pair of (strip) maps but they dropped them a fair few years ago and they're not easy to get hold of - someone's [s]selling[/s] trying to sell one of them (not even the pair!) for £90 on eBay!!!

Never mind, you can never have too many maps...
