due to a monumental ****up i managed to break both wrists and my left coallarbone 6 weeks ago. All on the mend but with added metalwork. wrists are aching but generally gettting much better.

Question is to anyone that's had a collarbone plated...

Do you always feel the metalwork on the inside? or does it feel the same as before after a while?

Also curious about this. It's been 10 weeks since I broke mine and it's still messed up. Looks like a 'non-union' and an operation to have it plated.

The x-rays make it look like they just stick an old door hinge in there in most cases. Not looking forward to it.

EDIT: @OP what's the actual plate like - is it visible, does it curve to the shape of the bone or is it just a rectangular-ish piece?

EDIT 2: Bring the gore!

I've got mine plated and am beginning to regret not having it removed. It's uncomfortable wearing a rucksack with a load in it. It's also a bit ugly as it sits very proud on my shoulder. At the time i didn't see the point in another operation as I wanted to get back on the bike again asap but looking back I'd have had it out.
It feels odd as well as they split the nerves when they operated. I can scratch one side of my shoulder and feel it on the other.
My 2p worth.
Tim

Ouch! Depends where the break is. In my case no it'll never feel the same as it did before. Even after physio I lost some mobility and it 'aches' after long bumpy rides (and if I chop lots of wood, use the pic axe a lot etc). And there's the added danger that if I crash heavily on it again the plate could break off and sever an artery (fatal time)!

Some great pics and explanation of the plating process here:

Mine was lower down. The NHS took 3 weeks to SEE what would happen if it was left alone. BUPA took me in within three days of a consulation and I had to have a bone graft out of my hip as the blood flow in the bone had dried up :O(
The bone graft was more painful than the broken collar bone TBH.

You've made a right mess of that though! Good work :O)

Everyone's different. Mine gives me no bother at all, you can feel the plate if you prod about, but can't really see it.
Some people have lots of problems, others have none, you'll just have to wait and see.
