Pike problem - lock...

[Closed] Pike problem - lockout stopped working - possible reasons?

I suspect this might be a problem with the seal between the lowers and upper assembly? My forks lockout has stopped working (the dial only turns partly and isnt smooth). Also, the blowout adjuster is just about stuck too.

When it happened, the forks lost some air from the positive chamber quickly.

They still work fine otherwise (as a descent off Helvellyn proved yesterday) and the travel adjust is functioning, but I suspect they will be heading to TFT soon.....?

Could be insufficient fork oil in the right hand leg (the one with the lockout switch). Does the damping still work (do the forks bob)? If so, take a look. Same happened to my Revs...

Sometimes the indexing in the motion control goes iffy... the bottom of the compression adjuster rod is forked and the orifice plate can sometimes jump out and either completely negate the lockout or reverse it in relation to the knob.

Thanks guys, I'll take a look before sending off.

Good point Cruz..... They are actually Ms AD's forks, maybe I have been neglecting the air for a while now!

jivehoneyive - having taken them apart and compared with a working set of Pikes I think you're right. The lockout level only turns about 90 degrees instead of nearer 180 on the working damping unit.

Plus, the faulting forks work fine if I swap the damping units.

So, it's either a new damping cartridge or I work out how to fix the dodgy one.

Any ideas?

That happened to mine, and filling the fork leg with the right amount of oil fixed it, but over time the oil leaked out again, so it must be a faulty seal, not sure which one though.

If it's just a lack of oil due to the leak at the top of the moco that's easy to fix. Loco tuning sells extra seals to sort it out.
But I don't think a lack of oil would account for the lockout not turning the full 180 degrees. Sounds like a problem with the moco itself.

It has a reverse thread to get into it

The oil levels are right, and have just filled up again to check.

Tell me more about the reversed thread and how to get in!

cheers

It's most likely the rod seal on the rebound seal head allow the damping oil from the uppers to get into the lowers resulting in the level being too low to allow the lockout to work.

The leak from the Moco as detailed in the Basque MTB link is a separte issue.

Hi Loco

What would you charge to sort that out if you're right, and for a new unit if it isnt repairable.

I'm still not convinced though, there's no sign of upper oil mixing with the lower and the problem was there immediately after I topped the upper to 120cl this evening.

Crazy as it sounds, the quickest way to re-index it is to just get nasty with it... grip the orifice plate and using the adjuster on the top for leverage, click it around until it aligns correctly.
