[Closed] Peak / Sheffield locals - route advice request (out to Edale)

Evening all,

Hoping the locals can help out suggesting a bit of a route combo to get from West Sheffield (Hunters Bar) out to Edale / Barber Booth - ideally using bridleways & back lanes - I'll be on a gravel type bike setup. I normally ride out that way on my road bike via Ringinglow and the usual obvious roads out, but looking for a something a bit different.

Suggestions most welcome and much appreciated, along with tips for the best place for a refreshing drink on the way.

Cheers,

CB

Obvious answer is stanage pole, down the causeway, then over bamford Edge to Yorkshire bridge, disused railway along to Thornhill. Back road to hope or if you’re feeling more adventurous you could go up onto Hope brink and then down jaggers clough to get to Edale.
More mtb than gravel though that but…

Up through the porter valley via Bingham park. Right at the top towards redmires then up past stanage pole. Down the long causeway, straight on at the bottom then right onto new road above bamford. Immediate right off the main bamford road towards Thornhill and Aston before dropping towards hope. If you fancy more off road you could add win hill and Jagger's Clough for some excitement!

Other alternative would be to do the same to Ringinglow then across Houndkirk Road, down to Grindleford then up Sir William Hill Road past the Barrel Inn at Bretton (you’ll want a rest after the climb).

Then round to Abney, up to Brough Lane and then either left and down to Brough to join up with the back lanes to Aston or right to Shatton to join up with the back road up to Thornhill (and then on to Aston, Hope Brink, Jaggers Clough and so on).

I was about to post a similar thread but I'd like to travel in the opposite direction.

I wanted a one way route back into Sheff where the Mrs could drop me off somewhere and I could ride back. Preferably off road as much as possible all the way to Hunters Bar would be ideal. Once I'm at the Norfolk Arms I know my way to Endcliffe Park.

The vertebrate graphics dark peak book has a route guide for linking various routes into and out of Sheffield- with hunters bar or rivelin valley options.

Whichever way you go there's a pretty big hole in things between the bottoms of Stanage/Green Drive and Bamford.

Going out (gravel), I'd go up the Parks, Porter Brook, Redmires, Stanage, then Hurstclough Lane into the back of Bamford (used to be ace on an MTB, now part tarmac so so-so on a gravelbike). Then depending on inclination a)round to Aston and then up to Hope Brink, or b)along the Thornhill trail, round the reservoir and either shitbastard or Elmin Pits up and over and down Jaggers Clough.

Coming back (from Hope). Up Brough Lane and half way down Shatton Lane then take the b/way tp Offerton that comes off at the hairpin. Over to Hathersage, then it's pick yer poison - steep minor roads up to Stanage and up the Causeway or up the main drag to Burbage/Houndkirk/Blacka.

There’s also the new permissive trail from Stanage Plantation down past North Lees Hall to near the campsite and then a nice quiet back road to Coggers Lane and in to Hathersage which is a nice alternative. It’s then a short ride down to Leadmill Bridge and then up the road towards Abney. You can turn off towards Offerton Hall and up the bridleway towards Shatton mast too from there which is rideable on a gravel bike.

Should have added that if you don’t fancy the climb from Offerton Hall up to the mast you can take the farm track downhill and join the road in Shatton. From there you can cross the ford, along Townfield Lane and then along the track in to Brough at the bottom of Brough Lane. Avoids almost all of the climbing and very pleasant too.

Thanks for the tips everyone - I had a splendid ride through the parks and up the Porter Valley, around to Redmires and Stanage Pole. This was followed by a very wet ride down Long Causeway as the heavens opened, then to Yorkshire Bridge and the minor roads before dropping into Hope for a coffee, and finally the easy classic road ride into Edale.

This was the view on the ride back to the station this morning after crashing with some pals in Edale.
