What overshoes do people recommend? For road riding... Looking for some that will keep my feet warm when its wet and windy. So ones with some amount of neoprene would be in there somewhere, as a guess.

Any voters for the expensive ones? Or are they any cheap and cheerful ones that would do the job. Cold feet are the one thing that can ruin a ride imo!

I would prefer if the zip isn't at the back as don't like the feeling of that while pedalling (on the Endura ones anyway).

I have Gore windstopper ones, but don't rate them hugely for long wet rides.

Cheers.

BBB Heavy Duty ones have been splendid for me.

I don't notice the feel of the rear zip, are you wearing really short socks?

+1.

The Northwave boots I bought last Christmas were the single best thing I've bought for cycling in cold/wet weather.

I've always used the Endura ones. For a side zip the new Sealskinz ones might do you...

I went through this last winter. Just couldn't find a boot that I liked the fit and feel of. Will probably have another look this winter.

I use seal skins merino socks and Sportful Prorace Windstopper booties. Tempted to get some GoreTex road shoes for this winter.

I currently use cheap Planet-X jobs, they're warm, fit fine and are dirt cheap. If it's really cold some toe warmers underneath help.

I switched to Goretex winter boots rather than overshoes. Less fuss on dark winter mornings, are likely to outlive me and in the summer sales were a bargain.

You can get road specific ones, but I use a Shimano MTB pair and just switch pedals in winter. Yeah it looks a bit clunky on a road bike, but it works, plus I can use them on the mountain bike.

Summer is the best time to get winter boots as the shops are clearing out stock for the new season. I picked up my pair last year for a song.
For me, Wiggle is showing 51% off at the moment:

++1 to the boots ... easier on / off, warmer (NW ones) 🙂

I bought some Pro Endure cheapies from CRC a few years back and have used them for the first time today on a road blast. I just wanted an overshoe to stop the rain getting in the shoe vents and sloshing about once filled and they done the job nicely.

I wore them with shorts and expected water to enter through the tops but they were dry. It rained continually throughout the ride but not particularly heavy and I was only out for around an hour.

£11 in a sale but probably about £15 if not. Rear zip, tho...

Edit : It's a summer rain thing for me - in winter I opt for boots for some of the reasons stated above.

Have road boots and calf-length merino socks. For overshoes I'd steer clear of zips if possible. Mine have always failed (Gore, several pairs). Now running LG velcro shoes over the boots.

For racing, it's velotoze. More bother than they are worth for application, surprisingly warm, but feet will get wet from the inside. And they are pretty fragile to walk in.

PITA. I have some zip up ones for racing, I'll trade half a watt for the huge faff of getting velotoze on in a hurry!

I have the Sealskinz overshoes, plus a pair of neoprene other ones, can't remember who by (DHB or BBB I think)

Fine for winter, thin or thick socks depending on actual conditions

1 winter of commuting in the Sealskinz has put holes in the bottom where I'm walking on them, but no big deal - would've happened to any overshoes

Like anything with road cycling you need 3 different pairs for different conditions.. windy and cold, wet, cold and wet...

... and the slippery aero ones for racing. Then there's the Belgian booties and the toe covers 🙂

Guys guys relax 😀

Bought some NW boots last year and didn't like them. Feel too stuff for sprinting or climbing out of the saddle. Much prefer the feel of shoes with overshoes.

I've been pleasantly surprised by some Endura waterproof overshoes I bought a couple of years ago, but I also have rapha neoprene for more pinkiness, and very lightweight lycra ones for broadly dry, but big days in the mountains.

Take a peek at some of Sidi's offerings, if you haven't already done so.

Find some boots that fit then.

Again, money no object, i'd be looking for boots.
Otherwise, just accept feet are going to get wet and combine any old windproof overshoe with good merino wool socks. Should stay warm even when wet that way.

Much the same experience here. Tried a few, NW, Sidi, Specialized, just didn't really like the feel. Maybe I should have persevered but, given the expense, they went back.

I'm still quite tempted to give the Lake CX145 a try though. Look a bit less bulky around the ankle somehow.

This for me. Merino socks and the Endura neoprene overshoes (at least until they "improve" the road ones in the same way they've ruined the mtb ones 😕 )

For REALLY wet rides, last year there was only epic of biblical proportions (that was great fun), I get completely soaked and then wear my spare pair of shoes and overshoes the next day

I'm really close to buying those Shimano winter boots linked above, but down in the soft south, I have to say that I found shoes and overshoes fine so it would be a £80 expense for no huge return

I've found the DHB Neoprene better than the BBB's (which were not thick enough to withstand more than 30 minutes of heavy rain). For full waterproofing you're better with waterproof socks (Sealskinz), waterproof boots (Northwave) AND a waterproof oversock/overshoe. Even then you'll get dampness in the top from your leg and your feet will be swimming in sweat... 😉

Zip at the back of the overshoe can interrupt the pedal stroke a bit I found!

And yes I just didn't like the feeling of pedalling in boots. Felt good and comfy in the shop, but just didn't like the feel of riding in them.

Not looking for my feet to stay dry, but preferably warm-ish.
