So I'm just about finished with satan's X'mas pressie. He's just turned 6 and is mad keen on BMX, but I want him to come play with me in the mountains, so this is much a pressie for me as for him.

Having done lots of research, I settled on the Orbea MX-20 Team which from a spec perspective was country miles ahead of everything else on the market (9-speed, shimano hydraulics, shimano hubs and so on). Out of the box it absolutely rocks, but I am a complusive bike-builder, so I had a think on what I could do without spending a fortune. The idea being, that whatever goes on, will come off when he switches up the MX-24 Team in 18-24mths time (reverting the MX-20 to stock and being sold on).

So the modifications list ran as follows:-

Spawn 127mm replacement cranks - These we needed as they have the correct BCD to run a NW chainring below 34t (all the other kids bikes have 5-arm cranksets which are 34t minimum). Due to a f%&k-up by Spawns UK distributor, the cranks were sent to me directly by Spawn in Canada along with a really cool kids racing jersey (worth another US$50) and they refused any payment for either item.

Snail 30t narrow wide chainring

Wellgo KC-001 pedals - ordered direct from China and arrived in 2 weeks.

Shimano Zee medium rear mech

Shimano Zee shifter

Shimano SLX 11-36 10-speed cassette

KMC 10-speed chain

Carbon inline seatpost

Carbon riser bars (cut down to 585mm width)

Thomson 50mm stem (I have a Thomson 70mm stem set aside for when he grows a bit more)

Muckynutz CX guard (perfect size!)

Orange anodised bits including skewers, bottle cage bolts, headset spacers and chainring bolts (not yet arrived)

Really quite chuffed with it and can't wait to see his little face on X'mas morning when he opens it. He's also getting a Camelbak Mini-Mule (the black one with the flames naturally), a cool kids trail helmet, trail shorts and various other bits and bobs from other family members.

Anyways, pics below (I hope they come out)

Yeah that's pretty pimp. 🙂

The Zee drivechain is *ideal* for kids in my opinion: all the range they'll need, will-last-the-next-bike bulletproof, nice short mech that isn't asking to be bashed into rocks.

Saint shifting and Zee rear mechs will stay on my boys bike builds until 26' builds.
Nice touch with the spawn cranks. Max is a great guy! Keep them in mind for the 20" Brood fork.. its nice and light and works like a real fork!
Great looking build!

Brilliant timing.

I'm going to collect Little J's later.. I was planning on just sticking a N/w chainring on ,but Campfreddie you have set the bar high. 🙂

My lads got the same bike, I wouldn't worry to much about BMX, most of the time he prefers to take the orbea over the BMX out, even to the BMX track!

I put the same pedals on as you and they are perfect, I also put a shorter 40mm stem on it and changed the grips, Otherwise it's as stock.

Those cranks look like the hup ones I've got on Samuels 20inch riprock.  Using a Zee mech with a 40t expander

Currently building a 24 inch wheeled bike for his xmas.

that Riprock is properly pimp... love it!

You should try the mucknutz cx guard... it seems to be better proportioned for the much smaller frames etc.

I looked at the HUP cranks, but they didn't go down to the 127mm crank length I wanted. The Spawn cranks were the only ones I could find which allowed fitment of a chainring smaller than 34t.

The bike might soon be getting a shiny new pair of XT icetech rotors as I'm now looking at switching wheels on my wife's new bike which may mean going 6-bolt.

Lucky kid, that's a pump looking bike 😎 I'm looking forward to when I can start building up bikes for my daughter.

You might want to flush off that cable tie in the chainstay, they can be sharp when not cut flush.

cheers, that orbea is well smart too your boy will forget about wanting a BMX.  Samuels has iceteck F&R but only because they were in the spare parts bin.  The fat guard worked quite well with his 2.8 tyres.  The new build will need something new.  Will sort that once the wheels arrive and I can build the thing.
