A friend has had a Nomad stolen and is being offered a Blood by the insurance company. He loved the Nomad but has not ridden a Blood.
Advice Please?
Weird why would they do that? They are quite different bikes and the blood good as it is can't be considered as an equivalent replacement. I don't mean it's not as capable because it is but it would be like replacing a six series BMW with a TVR. If nothing else the nomad is a good few hundred quid more expensive.
apparently the agent the insurer uses "does not stock Nomads"
Tell your mate to stick to his guns. The insurance companies have a few big shops to supply bikes and get big discounts from them.
Look at the insurance policy. It should say replacement or cash value at the insurance company's discretion. Even if it says "similar" you can argue that a single pivot is not similar to a VPP.
Would have thought a reasonably specced Nomad would be a good £500 more than an Orange
if they can't provide an equivalent, he should be able to demand a full cash settlement (they would normally reduce a cash settlement to what it would cost the insurance company to replace the bike).
he might have to argue a bit and complain to the insurance company, but he should get there in the end - and make sure every aspect is up to equivalent spec when negotiating the cash settlement! (i've been through this for bike and laptop...)
then he can go and buy it from a nice LBS instead :o)
He should be able to get a cheque made payable to a LBS (I did in the end after some haggling)
If it has to be an orange - I'd suggest the alpine 160 is more of a similar bike to the nomad (I believe the patriot is no more??)
Does he not have a copy of his original reciept to prove how much the bike cost him in the first place? They should honour that (if they are a half decent insurance company that is)
I had the same with Wheelies not stocking SC when my Chameleon (and 2 other bikes) got nicked. As it was they valued it based on a Cove Stiffee and then I could take that pot and spend it on any bikes/bits that they could get in. I ended up with a P7 Pro and a Tracer VP.
Second the comment on Alpine 160 being closer to a Nomad.
what Rod and CMW said; the insurer will have a discounted deal negotiated with a supplier and will try and force the customer to go that route as they are quids in. That is not replacing like for like- I had a similar problem when a Kona got nicked and actually used a car analogy when I argued the toss with them. I ended taking a cheque for a lower amount- I reckon if you went as far as the ombudsman (depending on your mate's cover's T+C's) you'd get the full value in cash, but as I had sourced a bargain year-end model I still came out of it well.
And thirded that the alpine 160 is the closest Orange equivalent to the Nomad.
