Hi all
i have the offer of a set of Mavic 823 UST rims, 32h & Hope Pro 2 hubs, 20mm front, rear Hope qr, with Hope floating rotors (but not to bothered about them)for very little compared to the cost of having them built, they have been used only a handful of times and are in as new condition, but are they any good, the rims that is, lets not start a debate on the merits of proII's as thats been done to the death 😆 i know the rims are basically mavics dh/freehide rim (the same as the Deemax) and as such on the heavier side, but on th eother hand i currently run Halo Freedom Disc wheels which are not exactly light, in fact doing a quick approximate caalculation puts the hubs and rims of the Halos as heavier than the Mavic/Hope set, but by the time i have added ust tyres and sealant will it be heavier?
So basically are the wheels any good?
And seeing as you'll no doubt be curious i'm talking change from £100
Cheers
I've got 823/proII combo on my Uzzi VP, which I only use for DH stuff. When I researched them, the 823 was generally considered the best heavy duty rim around. I wouldn't like to use them for much uphilll stuff though, they're pretty beefy.
Depends on your weight, riding style etc. I had the exact same set up on a nomad and thought they were great but i'm 210-220lbs with kit, lived in the lakes at the time and hard on wheels. With high roller ust's on I found anything over 4 hours of riding in that area with that weight/rolling resistance very hard going, really wiped you out. If your riding style/weight doesn't need them you could always buy them, sell them and use the money towards a lighter set of wheels.
well i'm about 180ish lbs kitted up so a bit lighter than you, its just a case of them being very cheap, wouldnt want to sell them on to be fair as this is a price for me only as a mate, one thing i am thinking is get tham see how it goes and maybe have them re-rimmed, the problem then is how much is that likely to cost.
@ Burls72 roughly how heavy would you say they come up at with tyres as tbh with the halos and high rools i'm running now i'm lokking at 3000g+ at an estimate.
I can weigh mine later for you if you like. 823/proII/Rubber Queen 2.4 UST
cheers Pedalhead would really appreciate that if its not too much trouble.
worst case scenario ride them for six months and either sell or rebuild.
cheers rob
Ok, are you sitting down? 🙂
823 rims, Hope ProII hubs, 2.4 Rubber Queen UST, 203/180 rotors, PG990 cassette...
Front = 2580g
Rear = 2910g
Bear in mind, those tyres are about 1kg each!
DH DH DH DH DH 🙂
(its wot I have on my DH bike anyhow, belting rims, but 'eavy!)
I'm a big fan of the rim but unless you really need it, its to much weight to live with IMO. It's not just the extra 100-150g rim weight its also the extra 100-200g ust tyre weight which on longer rides really kills your legs(well my week a*s ones!). I currently only have a 29er but if I went back to 26" it would be an am bike and I would have 2 sets of wheels, 823's and a lighter set with faster rolling tyres for longer days and less gnarly routes.
Sell them to me. Please. is it a 135mm rear? If so I'll just take the front. Thanks very much!
A nice wheelset, highly regarded in DH circles, but you'll soon realise why you got the Freedom rims and not the SAS's. Help your mate sell them for a decent price and let him buy you a few beers. Or buy a DH bike to match them.
look like i'll give these a miss then, suspected they where gonna be heavy but never seen them in the flesh, just didnt think that heavy.
More a case of not wanting to miss a bargin, green eyed monster playing with the bank card time !
They will be showing up on ebay soon if anyone else is interested, but couldnt say how much.
Cheers for the input people.
