Poor result, was surprised Team GB made no effort to get someone into one of the breakaways, the strategy of protect Cav at all costs only works if everyone else plays along

This was the only strategy they could have had. Noone else in that British squad stood a chance in a break but if it had come to a sprint Cav was pretty much a dead cert.

I don't think we can be to critical.

Who's that blonde guy in the Studio?

Vino "A popular winner"

Idiot.

This is the problem with the BBC's coverage - a bunch of generic presenters who aren't specialist, and dumb down the coverage and uncritically reproduce the hype.

If Fab had not crashed then I think he would have done the biz.

It sure was a strange crash mind.

On idea why everyone on here seems to think cav should have been handed it on a plate, clearly he is not good enough to win gold, otherwise he would have.

Vino...innocent until proven guilty?

Interesting that his haterz don't apply the same "logic" to Lance...

Lance has never been proven guilty, Vino has................

That's just not how Road racing works - the best/strongest rider rarely wins. The tactics and decisions of others makes for an infinite number of scenarios, not all of which are controllable by you. Experience and a healthy dollop of luck can have as much a part to play as any other asset.

I feel so sorry for Chris Boardman and Hugh Porter, let down by a director with a twitch in his finger who kept jumpintg the pictures, and seriously poor information being fed to the comentators.

Must be the worst outside broadcast of all time.

Steve, I think not.

As others have pointed out, your opinions were so blatantly wrong as to leave one thinking that you're either trolling or a bit dim.

Taking off my partisan hat, I tend to agree. Races like this should be targeted at all-rounders and not just one specific type of rider. Could you imagine the uproar if they finished something like this up a massive climb?

I know Cav made an effort to be a better climber for this but I think the rest of the team were having to hold back on the last climb to wait for him rather than countering the attacks.

Vino - FFS
Why did the German's even bother to turn up?
Would rather Spartacus had won.
Disappointed but not surprised there was no bunch sprint.
Just saw the end - did Froome do much before he peeled off?

Which is why it's such a simultaneously compelling and frustrating sport to follow.

You clearly know nothing about professional road cycling.

Vino - Just about the worst possible result? Maybe Valverde could have been worse, possibly.

If, as previously agreed, all pro cyclist have doped, does this really make any sense? Isn't there a case where some were lucky enough to have been caught while others were alowed to contiued in their cheating ways?

Depressing that Vino got it + no other team was prepared to work for their sprinters. Feel for Sparticus + GB team.

i love vino, very glad he won - frankly don't care if he has doped in the past. he's old, hard working, been unlucky recently and always makes it interesting. cav would have been good, but it's great to see him win out over careful team calculation.

Yup, Cav wasn't good enough to win just like Cancellera was to good to crash into a barrier - it's a hard sport and shit happens...

..would have loved to see a proper "all across the road" sprint finish tho' whether Cav won it or not

First off that's a big 'if'

The main problem is Vino's attitude. To my knowledge he made no comment whatsoever on his ban and Valverde fought it for long enough. Cheating is bad but you can salvage something by putting up your hand and saying 'mea culpa'

Exactly, it's down to who has had the best doctor.

Is it really that big an "if"? I'm working from the general comments here that assume most of the peloton eas doping. Some got caught, some didn't and some moved away to avoid detection.
It seems a bit odd to me that a clean rider is not given credit because something that was done in the past.
Back to the congratulations as this isn't a thread sbout doping.

Interesting idea that Uran sold the win to Vino, hence the pantomime look over his shoulder. I know it happens in lots of amateur races....

Yes, Homer, Danny is injured. Do keep up 😆

if Gwin doesn't take it and it's proper sloppy Hill may finally be back in with a shout, Pascal used to be amazing in the mud too and it's a track he's comfortable on.

Hard slog out there for the GB team today. I think most people can see that. Disappointing result, especially for Cav, but no one wanted him hanging around near the finish line. Maybe they should've went undercover, with fake moustaches and stuff...

Any news on Cancellara? He looked in pain.

And where's the interviews??

double post.

edit: I might as well use this space to express my frustration with the BBC. Watching on 'the red button'....get up to make a cup of tea...sit back down....bleedin' tennis is on??? Check I'm still on the red, yes, it's labelled 'live road race', so thinking they're just throwing in an update on the tennis I switch over to the Judo for 5 mins. Which was actually kind interesting...

Anyway, switch back....still tennis??

Only to realise the BBC have decided to show the rest of the race on BBC1 and put the tennis on the channel dedicated to, and still labeled 'live road race'. Howay man. Sort it out.

The lack of information on time gaps did make it a bit more tense though...

Who agreed they all had ?
Did i miss the vote ....searched STW for your comments on bertie 😉

and let the troll fest and insulting continue...like drunken football fans in a pub when their team has just lost. Let your stupidity, emotions and rather obvious trolling get the better of you and lets get all nasty with each other

Very predictable result, though hadn't marked Vino down as a winner. Though with hindsight if any rider was going to throw a finger at a over cautious bunch it would be him. Great win.

I'm on the volleyball now, who cares about the road race. The DJ just decided to play Benny Hill, very apt given how little they are wearing 8O.

Cancellara looked like he had a broken collar bone the way he was holding his arm.

It was a disappointment on so many levels, no least the coverage. Which was very poor. Wonder who was responsible for it.

Really Spin, clearly you have not followed sport over the past 30 years in particular cycling.

I've followed it over the last few years though and seen average speeds fall and previously imperious riders have really bad days.

But as said above this isn't a thread about doping.
