Interesting to find this amongst November's output from NICE. I wonder if it will have any tangible effect on policy makers?
I cycled to town and back at lunchtime 🙂 But I ate a pasty 🙁
It's NICE to be paid for stating the obvious
most of the UK are a set of lazy ****ers. Fact 😀
I wonder how much of this is down to shrinking budgets?
The cuban's have been running their health servicelike this for years, trying to keep people healthy rather than having to pay for drugs they can't afford.
[1st world rant]
I had to pay £7.95 for some percription drugs yesterday which are about the same price as paracetamol abroad. Great if you're on £20,000/month super dooper cancer drugs and getting them for £7.95, not so good for 28 x 20mg of Omeprazole which is a few £'s.

You need to get yourself one of those conditions that gives you free prescriptions, no I don't mean catch Scots or Welsh from someone infected by it - Hypothyroidism does it for me
TINAS:
Ask for a private prescription next time- most GPs would be happy to oblige. 🙂
I don't think the fact that NICE have published guidance on keeping people healthy by encouraging physical activity is some gov't plan to save money- they aren't capable of looking that far ahead. 🙄
It will take generations for money invested in physical activity to produce reductions in premature ill health, and to the government 5 years is a long term plan....
However it is really important that this message is coming out, because local authoritites, CCGs etc are expected to take heed of this guidance.
I became aware of it because its on a monthly email that the PCT sends out to all GPs and we are required to indicate which sets of guidance are relevant to us and that we have read them and will follow them, same applies to those who actually make decisions...
I'm pretty sure I'm happier paying over the odds for some pills or ointment for a nasty rash than I would be getting bargain-tastic cancer treatment.
Cross-subsidisation innit, which doesn't work if NHS docs hand out private prescriptions.

I haven't the foggiest, i assume 99% of meds probably cost more than the prescription charge, just mildly peeved that I needed something generic that's percription only so actually cost more than it would have done.
On the other hand without the NHS the consultation with the GP to get that prescription would probably have been £50.
The vast vast majority of prescriptions aren't paid for anyway.
I often shake my head at the "latest" guideline releases! I'm forever telling patients they don't need a gym to be active.
Simply put - "move more, in all ways" is the DrP mantra!
DrP
Swap someone my diabetes for paying for prescriptions and good health any day!!
Hey, DrP you can now tell the punters that your sound advice has the official NICE stamp 🙂
I'm planning to use this as "evidence" to encourage my employer (who I think is the second largest in Wales) to re-instate the c2W scheme.
To thisisnota(butiamreally)spoon, you're right fancy pants cancer drugs are a bargain. Especially when you become exempt from prescription charges as you have cancer.
A little idea to put in the back of your mind though, when you have cancer you have a fairly high likely hood of not being able to work to your full capacity, unless youre super human like bull heart. You have a high likelihood of losing some or all income. You have a high likelihood of this carrying on for months and months or years. Oh and you might die.
So the wondering from my mind is what price do you put on drugs, we're so much better off than America where you'd be skint regardless of what drugs you need. For your information the amount of drugs I've had would have bankrupted me several times over so I for one am very very grateful we have a national insurance scheme and a national health service. Without which I would be reading first world spoiled attitude rants!
This was in the press a few days ago. The predictable reaction on one right wing paper's website (think it was the Torygraph) - "Oh no! Not more cyclists!"
Lol it cost me about £20 to have an appointment with the docs here in Oz - thats after the government paid for the other £20. My prescriptions get charged at what it costs up to about £30 then you don't pay more. The main difference I could see was I could make an appointment and see the doc in couple of days as it's not full of people with nothing really wrong with them.
Good on Nice for suggesting some stuff to help improve fitness and health. It's a bit preaching to the converted here but there are plenty that don't get that you could walk anywhere.

Ours [here in the UK] is same day, if you call between 8 & 9am you'll be seen that day.

I remember that, it never really worked I think I got in once.
I can't recall ever not getting in here and with 3 kids there wasn't many weeks where we didn't have to take one of them and I've personally not had a problem with the system since they started sorting themselves out either.
