Shimano shoes (thinking of grabbing some in the crc sale) - do their sizes come standard, small or large - I take a wide 11 in UK fitting - so am thinking I'll need a 47 (essentially, 11.5) to give me the width? or are there better wider shoes? cheap is good, as I've not tried them before (planning on getting the bargain m520's they have there too). comments welcomed from one and all.
Go to a bike shop. Try them on. Then buy them in that very shop! Whodathunkit, eh? A shop, where you can buy stuff that fits!
I went clipless over xmas and was in the same position as you, i have fat feet. I am a size 9 and went 9.5 and they fit great. I went for AM45's which are not to everyones taste however. I also got the m520's which haven't missed a beat. Very happy and i'm not sure why you would spend more. £17 chain reaction!
NOTE: I would get the silver M520's as i got black and the paint comes of.
CaptainFlashheart: could do: but then I'd get patronised, ripped off, and generally made to feel unwelcome - and they rarely have larger (or smaller) sizes in stock, and a limited range. And it takes ages, and is hassle, and so on......
Seriously: Yes, I have a (non-local) lbs and if I'm passing I go in and they are good and friendly. And I spend money there (bought the bike there, for e.g.) But the ones I can easily get to are less like that.....
And the internet is easy.....
joemacca51 - thanks for the tip - was going black but if they end up silver.....
I've found Shimano pretty wide, but quite short, so you'll need at least 1 size bigger, especially if you want to wear thick socks under them.
If you have wide feet look at specialized shoes and go for the correct euro size. I'm anywhere between an 10.5 and a 12 but am normally a euro 46 which fit perfectly
My LBS in Luxembourg had big discounts on Sidi road shoes. In every single bastard size other than mine. Doesn't help you, but I'm bitter.
As above look at Specialized shoes as Shimano are narrow, or better yet for your first pair actually try some on in a shop.
Top tip.
Try not to forget you're clipped in.
But then again you might not be as thick as me.
EVERYONE forgets at some point.
used to ride with toeclips - with leather straps and all - so reckon clipless will be a luxury. However, I will still fall off, I know.
I find shimano shoes to be smaller and narrower than specialised or mavic.
No many how many times you practice when standing or leading against a wall, the first panic situation will mean that you revert back to muscle memory and pull backwards 🙂 as you slowly toppled sideways. Did this trackstanding (unsuccessfully) at a T junction and looked up at the driver behind wondering why I was laying on the road laughing... 🙂
I'm a wider footed gentleman - found that Specialised fit fine for me - for me I think they come up small in size - I measure 42 / 43, ended up with the 44.
That said, i know my feet are a touch odd so I did go to the shops and try stuff on - could call it a faff but, to me, better that than sending stuff back and too if the size you (mail) order does not fit or, worse, putting up with shoes that are 'not quite right' for the sake of not sending them back....
