not done one of these for a couple of years, so here goes.

looking for a 700c/29r wheeled rigid forked steel framed bike.
suitable for offroad touring with minimal gear, and comfy for on road touring with front and rear panniers.
cable discs will be used and full guards.

so far i have seen the surly ogre, anything else to look at?

this bike is hopefully gonna be my only bike, cos i dont ride normal offroad much now, something like this should suffice.

What about something similar to my old peregrine or another of Sam's Singular models?, unfortunately i had to sell it as i have a spinal problem which meant no matter what i did i couldn't get a comfortable position unless i raised the stem a stupid amount and ran it with flat or riser bars. T'was a lovely...lovely bike that had folk stopping me all the time and enquiring about it. Built up with a white industries build including a double-double chainset and twin ratio white industries rear freewheel so two gear ratios available with a flick of the wheel out to change ratios, one for hills and one for flat along with a titanium phil wood bb and phill wood drilled eccentric bb and titanium king headset - very sorry to see it go but it went to someone on the forum, i hope they still have it..

Before I read the op I thought Solaris after reading it I think there must be a Singular of some kind that fits what you want.

Yeah, the Singular Peregrine was intended to be my do-it-all wunda and touring bike as it has full rack mounts, mudguard mounts, EBB in case you need to ss it or if you wish to run it ss, rear mech hanger, 3 sets of bottle mounts.

Just look at the phil wood EBB and titanium phil wood bb in it.......lovely

I hope it's been treated well since i sold it, i forget who bought it?.

Gratuitous shots i've just found on my flickr account

Salsa fargo if you don't mind drop bars, I love mine. The genesis adventure bike if you want flat bars would also be worth a look, loads of braze-ons, full clearance for proper 29er tyres and discs.

Salsa El Mariachi. Steel if you want it cheaper, Ti if you want to splash out. Salsa have just released a rack for the slidey dropouts and you can fit the Fargo V2 forks for the front panniers and "anything mounts" for extra bottles and stuff. OTOH it will also take suspension forks when you still want some bounce. The dropouts give you a SS or hub gear option too.

I'm gonna get a set of Marathon XRs or similar and run it as my "soft-road" tourer.

Lot of bad reports? You sure that wasnt just the one guy who bought it then took it straight out on a big tour without any prep to check loadings etc. Ive not heard any negative reports since that one.

The fargo is a great bike if you want drop bars, loved mine but it overlapped my other bikes too much. Would be perfect as the one-bike.

EDIT: Surly Ogre, perfect flat bar alternative to Fargo, or the El Mar as mentioned above, too many choices!

I have the mk2 Fargo as my only bike.
Jones Loop bars,so proper disc brakes.
Do every sort of riding, change the front tyre to a 2.4 for trail centres
I tour on it Scotland in particular with panniers , tent straps to the underneath of the bars very well
Don't dismiss this bike due to that one review which always gets to the top of the goggle result review!
