Good to see a write up for Macc forest in current issue, but I can't be the only one who goes away disappointed that an area with so much potential and so well used, has such poor facilities for bikers. As far as I can tell the only provision is a single stretch of very boggy, almost unridesble trail and the rest is general forest use hardcore firetrail. What's the crack then? Anybody know if UU have any plans to add any trails -though based on their past record my expectations aren't high. The downhill went in so there must be some hope?
This is one of my favourite areas, be it also because is is fairley local to me. Macc forest itself is dull, apart from.the downhill track, which makes me want to chuck up from just looking down it, it looks far too much for me.
Anyway, it is the surrounding area thats makes it good, three shires head area, Cumberland clough, Hollinsclough. loads of great trails to take, most of them legal ones too. The forest is only a starting place for me, mainly due to the Leather smithy pub - great food and beer, and the leg warmer of the opening climb up to charity lane.
Personal choice l, but I like the facilities as they are, ie a pub and a parking place, I wouldn't like bike shop/cafe with designated trails and routes. The are plenty of local trail centers for that.
Macc forest AREA is great, the forest itself isn't.

I love that on a singlespeed, but the little road section at the top is a cheeky blighter.
+2 been riding their for years get along to teggs nose info centre and pick up the grit and gears maps some nice routes in and around the forest ,usually ride out to them to make it long half day

I like that section, but not that much.
A singlespeed, I usually end up in gear one out of thirty. Is there a smiley for "dothing your cap":-o
Fair enough, but I personally would love to see /be a part of some trail development in the forest. Even a couple of decent, descent lines would make the forest a good venue in its own right, and as you say the up hill fire trails are already in and the surrounding area makes great riding - except the drag on the rat run up to the Cat and Fiddle.
Guess the point of this thread was just to see if anybody knew about any plans or could point me in the direction of people who might.
Its frustrating because i've run around the forest and the footpaths are great - they know how to make good, all weather trails already and I was hoping that with the current trend for development for mountain bikers around the UK, UU might consider spending a bit of that fat profit on us. That bog of a linker trail is a joke.
What's the problem again Andy? Its frustrating because i've run around the forest and the footpaths are great - they know how to make good, all weather trails already and I was hoping that with the current trend for development for mountain bikers around the UK, UU might consider spending a bit of that fat profit on us. what they said, the forest is pooh, the surrounding stuff is brill ๐
I dont know if i would go as far as to say the surrounding area is brill!Everybody to there own.
yep, the forest is no good for mountain bikes. The surrounding area is only ok IMO,a lot of it is all fairly samey rocky double track bridleways, which can be fun, but not to my taste.
I live locally'ish, so its good for an after work ride round (and I do try and get up there once a week), but I wouldnt go miles out of my way to ride there.
