Anyone ever got 4 hardtails and 4 people inside a Mondeo estate?
I reckon it's doable. We've shoehorned 3 and 3 in a golf before, so it would be disappointing if we couldn't get 4 and 4 in the Fundeo.
To be honest, I'll probably give it a go even if someone says it definitely can't be done, but it'd be encouraging to hear someone say it definitely can be done.
Cheers!
I've seen 5 bikes and 5 people in a Ford Escort estate (it was a tight fit!) so a Mondeo should be fine.
Mondeo estate owner here..
Should be doable, although you may have to loosen stems - turn bars etc.
Take seat posts out..
Get a roof rack.. roof bars are there already.

I did want to get them all inside the car. Partly because I'm tight with fuel (Lunnun to brechfa), partly for piece of mind of not having bikes tied to the back of the car with string, and partly because I like an challenge and it would be satisfying.
Plus I'll be driving so I'm not especially concerned with how comfortable the passenger seats are. Actually, the less comfortable my passengers are, the more likely they are to stay awake and talk to me. Probably about how uncomfortable they are!
Melt them down.
Post some pics if you do manage it.
Easily I'd have thought - I can do 4 bikes plus 4 folk in the boot of a focus estate.
Wheels and seat posts out, rack the bike frames length ways across the boot, alternating the frame direction. The key is to overlap the rear triangles and forks, then rack the wheels in the back of the boot nearest the hatch where its narrower, then a couple of front wheels squeezed in the space at the of the boot.
Leaves a back seat free for kit - bit of a squeeze with overnight stuff but fine if your only going for a day.
Well I know I can get 2 bikes with wheels off under the load cover of an Accord estate and that includes the wheels. The Mondeo is a similar size if not bigger so I reckon it should be quite easy. I reckon put down the 1/3 seat split. Lay 2 frames flat in the boot and you should be able to stack the other 2 frames vertically through the seat pointing backwards.
Which version mondeo? I did 4 and 4 in my mk2 hatchback all the time. Just needs the wheels off. Here's how:
Wheels off, load biggest bike first. Single seat in the back folded down.
First frame in across the boot flat, front of the bike to the right, mech in bottom left corner as you look into the boot. Bottom pedal fits in the hole at the near side of the boot, just push past the carpet. So it sits completely flat.
Next three go in facing alternate directions. Put 2 wheels on top. This should have your boot filled to the level of the top of the seats if you've done it well, plenty space for bags. Remaining 6 wheels go vertically in the space where the seat is folded down. Bungee round the grab handle in the roof holds them in place.
Easy.
Easy peasy, we fit 4 people and 2 bikes in a previous shape fiesta at the weekend so if you cant manage 2 more bikes in a mondeo there's something wrong!
I've had five bikes, 2 people, camping gear, tools, etc and the entire worldly possessions of one of the people in a Mondeo hatch.
To make it easier remove the unused seat back (easy) but unfortunately the base is a single piece.
Also remove forks.
IA: Thank you!
I will try that first. Sounds like I won't have to try anything else.
I'm going to assume that yours is the same as mine, and that the small split is on the right as you look at it from back of the car.
Cheers all, provisional pint of ale to AI, depending on where he lives and whether or not his procedure does the business. 6 wheels with tyres sounds wider than the small seat split, that's my only concern.
Edit: just read IA's post again: if you can do 4 and 4 in a hatchback, I'll be very disappointed with myself if I can't do the same in an estate.
3 and 3 in a P reg POLO. Beat that!
Friends and I have achieved 3 and 3 with ease in a mondeo hatch so an estate should be fairly straight forward.
I'm thinking: both wheels off and bikes stood upside down bars straight but frames alternating direction. Rear wheels in between frames, fronts should find a place easy enough at the end. last bike might need bars turned.
Yeah, split on the right.
I might even have a photo of them packed..... *rummages*
I guarantee you I could get 4 people and 4 bikes in my Focus. Some dismantling would be involved (it'll take whole bikes with the seats down but needs wheels off with them up) and there wouldn't be a huge amount of space for baggage but it wouldn't be particularily hard to do. Mondeo's a reasonable amount bigger so no bother
