The title says it all really....

Is a Maxxis High Roller 2.35 good as a general purpose rear tyre?

Yes. Although I found it better as a front tire with a Minion DHF as a rear tire. The minion is faster rolling but the high roller seems to have more grip. High rollers are very slow rolling but very grippy and pretty puncture resistant (IMO)

Been good to me, however IMO the rear has worn pretty quickly (12 rides of about 3 to 5 hours each)

I use one on the front. Grips and does what it says on the tin really. Very slow on the rear.

Hi I can understand why some tyres roll better than others but can someone explain why the high roller is slow on the rear and not on the front?

Cheers

Rich

I'm intending to use it on the rear but could be persuaded to go for an alternative..

Most of your weight is on the rear tyre, so the rear has more effect on overall rolling resistance.

Yeah but that would be true of all tyres, is there something inparticular to the high rollers tread pattern/compound etc that accentuates the resistance to the point that people are commenting about it being slow on the rear?

So on that basis is it better to have a wide tyre on the front and a skinny on on the rear?

Its a slow rolling tyre with loads of grip. Clearly lots of people feel its worth the compromise on the front and not the rear...myself included. Im on a minion fr on the rear and will be popping a big crossmark on when it drys out abit.

Cheers Stuart making sense now, Ive had a high roller on the rear for a while, will look at putting it on the front and trying something faster on the rear.

I run a 60a on the front as I don't think it'd last on the rear and I like a nice and grippy front tyre.

I thought most people ran them the other way around, minion on the front as its very grippy and high roller on the back as it rolls a bit better....am I 'rse about face? Just ordered the pair and now wondering which way round to fit them!

HR LUST 2.35 front Advantage 2.1 LUST rear. Nice combo.

For XC, hate hate hate.
For DH, nice!
For doing epic rides in Spanish mountains, suicide (nearly).

I think I'm the only person on the planet now that enjoys riding on 2.1 tyres when doing XC. Never been an issue with them... 🙂

I also like 2.1 for general riding. Though advantages are quite big for 2.1.

I have a 2.1 on the rear, looks really narrow! Seems to roll just fine. Doesn't grip amazingly in the mud so I dunno how well it'll work up front, but loads of downhillers seem to swear by the wider ones so it can't be that bad..

Like others here I was gonna go for a Minion front but maybe I should just get the downhill version of the High Roller for front.

Aye, to be fair my DH has a 2.5 on the front and a 2.35 on the rear.

Grip is good with my Nokian NBX 2.1's never had an issue. On another bike I've got 2.25 NBX lites, they're ace, but worn out so super sketchy on the corners - much fun!

They're v good, but I've switched to a Minion up front and it's better in loose soil and mud. Super tacky is a drag on the back, so I'd go 60a 2.35 here, with a 2.5 ST up front. Unless you're riding just dh.

2.1 Nevegals here, just about right for most XC stuff.

But 2.1 HRs would probably be a bit on the skinny side.

To the OP, I don't think HRs are that draggy - but maybe consider 2.2 Rubber Queen on the rear instead?
