Hi all,
Have a grating/whizzing noise from my freehob only pedalling at speed over sat 20km/ph. Any ideas what it might be? It stops when free wheeling or at low speeds.
Thanks
Drapper
Your freehub needs servicing, the bush makes that noise when its run dry or cacked up. Do it sooner rather than later cos it damages the bush and wears the bearing surface of the hub quite quickly.
and only use mineral oil
thanks lads! thought it was something simple like that!
might give it a go myself and see how it goes - what could go wrong!
Its dead easy, you'll be fine. ๐ As jumpupanddown says only us mineral oil and just watch out for the small washer that goes between the hub and the freehub body. Sometimes folks forget to put it back or lose it. ๐
As stated above, it's pretty straightforward.
If the bushing is a little too worn & you have play in the freehub don't worry about having to buy the whole freehub assembly kit from Mavic - there are replacement bushings available from The Hub Doctor & others on fleabay.
I converted my old XL's with the cartridge bearing conversion kit from ebay. No more nylon bushing.
Chunkymtb - have you had any issues since? The reason I ask is that Mavic did away with bearings & put the bushing in because the bearings were too small/weak to take the forces exerted through the freehub. The early models all had bearings as standard & had a very high failure rate which is what put me off 'em for years.
where is the best place to but the full freehub kit for mavic st? CRC aint got any. Its a 2010 set.
I've used Cycle Surgery in the past but tend to get Mavic spares off the Hub Doctor. They're coming from the U.S. but are in stock so arrive quicker than UK suppliers can sometimes manage.
What's the reason for only using mineral oil, do other lubes degrade the bushing? I ask because I've always used whatever oil is to hand as it normally happens when I'm away for a weekend or something, sods law I believe!
The normal(crude based) oil will make the bush swell and increase wear. I've used synthetic oil before when stuck which was OK, but mineral oil is the best bet.
Best stop using it and buy some mineral oil then!!
Any suggestions for what mineral oil? Would LHM be any good? As I've got that already for my XT brakes.
