[Closed] Lubricating oil in Rockshox lowers - where does it go?

So, you service your Rockshox lowers, add 15ml of 15wt oil (or whatever your fork requires) then go off and ride. A few months later you come to do this again, remove the lowers, and only a couple of ml of oils escapes (in my case anyway, but on at least 3 forks).

So, where does the oil go? It must either leak out of the lowers, through the bolts, then getting past the crush washers (unlikely?) or is it lost in tiny amounts, but repeatedly, onto the stanctions?

Or, can it get into the rebound cartridge and mix with the 5wt oil that I put in there?

More than likely your seals are leaking if there's not much left in come service time.

They never put a full 15ml in each leg from the factory though anyway.

As above ๐Ÿ™‚ Mboy knows his stuff.

Factory seem to forget to put any oil in the lowers, recently dropped my lowers on a newish set of forks and nothing in there.

Yep, it is transferred from the foam ring onto the stanchion. It should be kept in the leg by the oil seal on the upgraded forks with black seals, but if these are worn or on an old fork this is exactly why you need to service them regularly

15 ml? My Rebas need only 5ml according to the RS chart.

It slwoly pisses out the seals.

It'll evoaporate too and the seals won't be air tight.

Revs and Pikes, older ones at least, need 15ml of 15wt, but I guess this doesnt need to be as precise as with the measurement of damping oil. I bought a set of Lyriks with zero ml in each leg recently....

So, oil loss is inevitable, and actually part of the design - doesnt mean faulty seals, unless the loss is happening too quickly (whatever that is).

Thanks.

If it wasn't being 'lost' it wouldn't be lubricating the seals, just sat under them, it has to let a little bit out.

Yep, that explains it well enough. If you're bored, there was a thread on here a year ago about how the oil finds it's way past the bushings and oil seal (if fitted), and fights against gravity, to reach the foam rings.

my 2010 revs only need 5 ml apparently, although always temped to put in a bit extra.

Yeah, put in 15ml, 5ml really isn't enough to keep the stanchions and bushings lubed well.

@rickon, really? Still go with 15 ml?
I've just put 15 ml in a 2011 set of Revs, having always needed 15 ml with my older RS (didn't consult the manual on this occasion, I know..)
Having now read the manual and seen it states 3 to 8 ml, I was considering dropping the lowers again, through fear of them exploding or something!
Do others still stick with 15ml in each leg?

I'm running 15ml in each leg, as long as you can still get full travel I can't see any issue..... LoCo would be bale to say for sure though if you're damper is going to fly off and hit you in the face ๐Ÿ˜‰

LoCo....... assemble!

Afternoon, Rockshox say 3 to 8 ML of 15 wt in each lower leg. I wouldn't put more than 10ml in as it's possible it'll cause the seals to pop out the legs.
Older non power bulge legs generally have 15 per leg, but check the RS specs for each fork.

#off to play some Jazz flute now ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yip, put 10ml max in the other day up from 5ml and will see if i die this afternoon. I've partly done this as the forks were starting to stick at the top of the travel as i presume due to oil very slowly leaking out the bottom since i last dropped the lowers 3 months ago. No sticking now, but the problem is, with new crush washers and i'm pretty sure the leak is actually coming out the end of the rebound adjuster.

Hmmm.... maybe I'm thinking 15wt, rather than 15ml. Whatever way round, I put in more than stated, as I find the bushings aren't lube enough and end up knocking if not stored upside down - which then causes my brakes to have air migrate to the calipers.

If my seals pop off into my face I'll have to send LoCo the photos ๐Ÿ˜‰

I have had this happen to me when I put in 15ml, 10ml fine.
