Might be a bit of a long shot, but you don't ask you don't get!
Basically moved to St Albans recently and looking for some local XC routes, go to the usual places a fair bit; Ashridge, Aston Hill and back to the peaks and wales a lot, but it would be great to know of some routes that don't involve driving anywhere for a quick (or long) blast straight from the house.
I am off to the local bike shops to ask the same question, but thought I would ask the collective Hive mind of Singletrack as well.

Plenty of routes about, have a look at Strava or Endomondo, I've posted loads on both of these.
Also check out [url= http://www.ottmountainbike.co.uk ]ottmountainbike[/url], the message board has ride details, I lead the night ride every Tuesday from Sandridge an easy ride north of St. Albans.
Check out: chicksand/ woburn for a drive & ride with with (some) tech in it.
whippendale woods, watford have a few trails too apparently.
Otherwise it's bridleways all the way 😉
