I am after a fairly light weight set of wheels for my newly built Anthem X. Currently has some Ritchey ones from a boardman. Not bad but would like them lighter for sure. Something that does not cost an arm and a leg but it is around or below the 1500gr mark.

I have found these but it seemed to me like the weight is a bit too low? Stans Hubs and Olympic rims . The question is assuming this is an accurate measurement will it be ok for an 8 1/2 stone rider riding somewhat tame trails but with chances to ride something a bit rougher?

hard to beat the hope XC sp3 on stans 355s for value vs weight ...

LOL ok cause I have to say - and maybe I am being overly picky - I can't stand that clicky noise.

In any case how much would they they weigh?

Can't find them on Winstanleys for 260... more like 300£. Plus the quoted weights are 655 and and 877 so nearer the 1600gr mark and defo that wouldn't include the cassette would it???

no cassette but circa 1525g is what i came up with

relitive to my old wheels which were dt swiss x1800s they were about 480 grams lighters on the same scales.

Yes that sounds more reasonable really, so here is the question is the extra 80£ and presumably less burly construction worth the 150gr savings on Olympic rims and Stan hubs? 🙂

There were some good deals on Roval Controles for a while, not sure if they're still out there though.

your 8 1/2 stone riding tame tracks, you won't have problems with the olympic build.

i have tune hubs on olympics with revolution spokes. i'm 13 stone, raced them all over the place on technical tracks, riding dh tracks, drops upto 4ft.

you'll be fine with the lighter ones, and better off getting them.

Also go with KCNC cassette (nearly 100g less than XTR) and some Ashima rotors (83g for 160mm) and Ti skewers (save 50g+) - and if you are really pushing, Ti rotor bolts - another 12g saved...

I am almost 13 stone and use Stan Olympic rims (on Pro II hubs) on two of my bikes and have had no issues with them. Really nice set of rims and well worth the cash.

I've got Tune Prince/Princess on Alex XCR-Pro Scandium rims & DT Aerolites. 32 spoke, sub 1,200g. I'm 9st12, and they have been fine, only slight problem was down to my incompetance! Unfortunately the pair cost twice as much as my car 😳

Peice of advice, if buying Tune hubs (and you should) don't get them from Poshbikes, try Starbike in Belgium, they ship to the UK and have much better customer service.

Pro2s on ZTR Olympics here, built with Sapim CX Rays and alloy nipples. Super light, mega reliable, and run tubeless too. Great set up.

Have you thought about how much your tyres weigh? Schwalbes are light, grippy fast rolling and go tubelesss easily.

I've got hope pro IIs built on stans 355 with dtswiss comp spokes. Around 1550g, and handled alps, wales, and everything else fine. 8.5 stone as well.

Stans Olympic rims on XTR hubs here, with DT Rev spokes and ally nipples - lovely wheels and weigh 1377g 🙂

Brilliant! Couldn't afford Tune hubs - The 400£ of the Stans hubs/rims/revolution spokes setup is testing my budget really as I want to fit a pair of SIDs to replace the Recon UTurns currently on the bike as well. But I think for 380 at 1360gr is not a bad pair of wheels since it seems they will carry my weight just fine!

Thanks everybody!

as I always say....wheels are the most important bits of anybike.
So spend more than you budget on them,I have a similar build on olympics on rapido progress hubs and the hope on 355s too the olypics are way better and lighter too.I ride in the north peaks regularly doing stuff most 6inch day riders wouldnt dare on these set ups.
hope that helps
Bruce

You could also look at www.justridingalong.com as they're superb wheels, very well built and their customer service is excellent. As a 15 stone rider I've been on their wheels for 18 months they'll take the punishment - not been trued since I bought them. ZTR podium rims make an even lighter build - happy shopping!

Glenncampbell, this is where I found them - that's the initial link, though not with the podium rims. Thought I wouldn't go that far :p

120gr off for another 60£ .... tempting.

The podium rims are very good and seem to be significantly stiffer (during building anyway) than the Race rims that they replace but be aware that they have a limited lifespan and are really a race only rim.

I'd stick with the Olympics or maybe wait a little for the new Stan's rims

Matthew any clue as to when they are expected to arrive? I was planning on getting the new wheels some time in January.

Don't worry about the Hope freewheel noise. I always said I would never use a hope hub because of it, until I actually rode one and didn't notice it much if at all. Now I have a few sets and that is due to grow, again, I hope.

Both my present race bikes have Hope sp3 xc. One has dtswiss 4.2d rims and the other has the 355's. I much prefer the 355's. I would also say, personally, that the 355 is stiffer than the olympics which I have on another bike.

The Hope Hoops are a hell of a bargain.

Have you considered American Classic MTB 26?

I just got a pair for £399 and they are 1520g.

op - I don't think you'll go wrong with the whole stans set up.

I've got a pair but with american classic hubs and they work fine on everything - I'm 12 stone with kit. Fwiw I've got a pair of factory american classic 26 wheels too, and although only 1500g they appear bomb proof.
