I am cycling across america this summer. I was planning on packing light using a rear saddle bag, top tube bags, half frame bag and front panniers. My current frame is a FR602 but the forks don't have pannier mounts, should I just get a front pannier rack that doesn't need them or look into get a different frameset that might be better for the job. Any advice would be appreciated.
Could just replace the fork with a suitable one?
Sounds like a reasnoble setup if unconventional. There are carbon touring forks, or if you dont need full panniers you could go with salsa anything cages for small stuff and a dry bag on the bars for the sleeping bag.
mail sent about your trip, as I'm planning the same! be good to bounce ideas..
Rear panniers and a bar bag are all you'd need.
Are you riding the Trans America Trail? The crosswinds in Kansas and eastern Colorado might make a frame bag a liability. A couple of water bottles are essential for long stretches between services.
It's worth packing for searing hot days and sub zero nights. Don't mail home your winter gloves until after the Rockies and Yellowstone

Yes....that..... 🙁
But I can recommend the free "dog poo pick up mitt bags" in an emergency 🙄
Strongly recommend using a mirror when cycling across the USA. Very useful on low traffic roads to know when an overtaking car and an oncoming vehicles will be meeting as they pass you. In some wind conditions you won't hear overtaking vehicles.
In general I found American drivers good but had the odd close pass made more comfortable with being forewarned and once had to ride off the road to avoid being hit.
