I would like to build a table that can hold a hub in place while I'm lacing the spokes. Most typical wheel builders place the rim flat on a table, and insert the spokes into the hub as they go around the rim. Another approach is to insert all the spokes into the hub first, then attach each spoke to the rim. Problem is that once you turn the hub upright, cannot rest on the table (obviously because the spokes are not only hanging above the hub but below.
So, looking for ideas on what to use to support the hub upright so I have free hands to attach the spokes to the rim.
Or the third approach fit the spokes one flange at a time with the hub and rim lying flat on a table. Do all the spokes that come from the inside of the hub first then those that come from the outside and then turn the wheel over and do the other flange. This method leaves both hands free to lace spokes
I use a block of wood with a hole in it to hold the hub and a few other blocks to support the rim. Not usually necessary on ordinary rim, but I've been lacing 80 and 100mm rims.
