Why isnt there a standard to measure tyres by? Currently running conti MK 2.4 and finding them a bit wide want to swap for something slightly narrower to avoid too much clogging up in mud but as different manufacturers measure their tyres differently it makes it a bit tricky. Any recommendations.

I'm guessing here - but I reckon MK 2.2s will come up narrower 😉

Watch out there, 2.4 MKs aren't particularily wide so you might think you can try, oh, a 2.35 Nevegal or a 2.2 Rubber Queen and find they're actually wider! 2.2 MKs on the other hand are relatively skinny, but quite poor.

Rant approaching... You're spot on, it's a total pisstake. Conti are IMO the absolute worst for this... People come out with all sorts of excuses for their terrible sizing but the fact is the 2.4 Rubber Queen is huge, the 2.4 Mountain King is skinny, the 2.2 RQ is about the same size as the 2.4 MK, and their other tyres are just as erratic.

You can just about forgive half-assed measurement or marketing-led size claims or a nonstandard sizing method, so it's not surprising that different companies size up differently, but it's pretty unforgivable that they have inconsistency even within their own range I reckon. It's true that different tyres come up different sizes depending on the rims they're put on etc but that doesn't explain this sort of obvious bull****.

Kenda own a golden ruler, and every friday afternoon John Tomac himself comes in and measures all the Nevegals they've made in the week. If they're not exactly the size they say on the sidewall, he refuses to sign them. Fact.

Just for extra info they are mounted on Mavic crossrides in a Cotic soul frame and I guess only have about 8mm clearance both sides of chainstay. Looks like i might try looking at Kendas next if only because they might be consistent.

Just a thought if i did compile a standard for manufacturers to adhere to how and who do I need to talk to make things happen Who is the head honcho, god, all seeing one within the tyre industry or is it just try to get them round a table and beat them into submission. Surely it would help punters when frame builders quote my frame fits x tyre with x room left.
