[Closed] Insuring my bikes....M&S won't cover me.....

[#2236989]

I've recently moved into a grade 2 listed farm house, which means M&S will no longer cover me as they don't do listed buildings.

We've managed to get the house covered with direct line, on a deal with our car insurance, but they only cover bikes upto £1000, which both of mine are over.

I guess i need to find standalone insurance for them probably...or any advice welcome really as not many people seem to want to have anything to do with keeping things in a listed building!

Do you own the new house - ie buildings and contents cover? If thats the case you might still find it cheaper to get contents only cover from M&S on top of the cover from direct line than stand alone bike cover. There were only 2 or 3 stand-alone bike insurers the last time I looked (which was a few years back), and with any of them you'd be looking at around £100 per bike to cover them and have a policy thats shot full of exclusions, caveats, lists of approved locks, times when your bike can't be outside etc.

No i don't own the house, it's rented - contents only.

The fact is as soon as M&S ask me the address, they refuse to cover me as it's listed. it's not a case that i can take their cover on top of the direct line cover.

fair enough. Well stand-alone cover is going to make you pretty grumpy I'm afraid.

However if not too much time has passed then don't forget you have a cooling off period of about 2 weeks with insurance policies, so if you can find someone who'll give better contents cover in your circumstances you might be able to switch

Actually....... try asking M&S again, Contents Only seems to be a bit of an afterthough with them, for years their website used to tell you flatly that they didn't do cover for rented properties even though always have done.

Firstly - I can't see why a building being listed has any bearing on the contents cover, although obviously it would on buildings cover, which might be why their system is flagging it.

Secondly - It's just occurred to me that I live in a rented Grade A listed building, and I've had M&S cover here for the last two years!

Cant you just add the bikes as a named item/value? That's what I did with one of my bikes and it was only £16 for the year.

Aren't the bikes covered on your contents insurance anyway?
I'm with privilege and my bikes are covered by my contents insurance. That's not away from the home though. I didn't see the point in that as I'm always with my bikes.

Probably a bit late as you've already sorted your home insurance, but as an alternative to M&S, Hiscox home insurance will cover any item up to £15000 without listing it. In my case it was far cheaper than M&S too.

NFU mutual is your friend...

We have a listed, thatched cottage and had the same issue, NFU covered them as specified items.

Wouldn't insure my contents because the house was too old (1950's)...not sure why that is a problem, but there you go.

I use cycleguard insurance but it's pretty expensive. Got a quote from my home insurance that was more though.

Intereting - I have a flat in a listed building and am insured with M&S - and it is declared and they ghave paid out once - contents only.

Careful with M&S insurance - I got a quote from them but because neither the lock on the flat door, nor the building entrance doors have M&S certified/approved locks, I'd be eligible to pay the first £1,500 of an insurance claim, which is a total joke 🙁

I found the cycle cover available via Evans cycles pretty reasonable

Another one to try is CTC. Insure up the £12.5k new for old. Look expensive though £500 for £5k cover.

Wonder if it's an idea to put £500 in a savings account each year and hope you don't get burgled every 10 years. 😕

I had insurance with halifax, with my bikes as named items, i think my 6k nicolai was arounf £80, and my 2.8k prince albert was £60, the only clause was that they were not allowed to be kept in the garage r outbuildings.

However they were both stolen from my car, and they paid out the full ammount for both bikes, less my £50 excess.

Excellent to deal with on the whole

definately worth checking with M and S if they will do contents only for you. was impressed that i didn't get a big premium hike this year after a 10k claim last year.

Norwich Union/Aviva have been very good in my experience. They insure as standard up to £1500 per bike and more expensive bikes can be insured as named items. They cover out of the ordinary homes and I have found they are extremely easy to deal with these days too.

Maybe theres been a change of policy - my house is another century older than yours, A list, rented. Covered with no questions. That last three places I've lived have all been from around the 1850s, and listed and/or in conservation areas. Never a question over M&S cover. Renewed just 6 weeks ago too.
