I ride mainly by myself on the road but am wondering how much faster you go when riding in a group/ drafting etc? Is something in the region of 5km/h in the right ballpark. I know there are various factors, just looking for an idea.

You'll go a lot quicker than you would on your own if you can hold on.

25 mph average sound good?

I went out in my first proper chaingang and went around 4-5 MPH faster! You're so protected by the riders in front of you that you get a great rest and can really push on when you get to the front. Great fun!

4-5mph would be my rough guide as well. Our local one touches an average of 26mph over a flatish 40 miles. If I push it I can hit 21mph on the same route.

No use what so ever in the hill, won't add much there.

4-5mph sounds about right for a group that knows what they are doing. Get a chain gang pushing it on a section to get home and you could be looking at 35mph.

It's at these sort of speeds that you really begin to see how much effect drafting has. It takes a lot of concentration to keep the right distance from the bike in front.

Belated edit!

By 35mph I mean actual speed not additional speed

I blame this rather nice red wine which I've been left to finish ๐Ÿ˜†

I believe rider #2 gets 10% benefit and rider #3 gets 30% benefit.
Whatever it is scientifically it makes a hell of a difference when you have a skilled group riding together. Just make sure the lead rider knows his signals and remembers there's a group behind when he dodges round potholes...
