i have just popped the seal on my headset bearings and inside the grease has gone a crappy black colour is this normal? Also if i pack in some more grease is there a good way to do this without a grease gun as i dont own one cheers
Not sure what colour the grease is to start with!! black, white, green, blue???? are the bearings still good, how much use etc etc, pretty sure you can get replacement bearings from CRC, use good quality bearing grease (finish line lithium etc)use finger to load bearing with grease if not sealed units, which I think they are!!!!!! if they are sealed, black gooey stuff sounds like goosed bearings (replace them and wipe a light smear of grease when fitting to add a bit of water repelancy and aid fitting.
If it's the older, non removable but serviceable type of bearing, then I think they used Mobil222 grease which was a dark blue colour and very sticky. Not a good idea to add clean grease to dirty stuff, if it is dirty then flush it clean with degreaser and dry out before repacking.
