I think degreaser from the LBS is rather expensive though it is good at what it does. Are there any homebrew versions people make and use themselves?

I normally use the wife's home made curry sauce. Cleans more than chains too.

brush saver is good, but it is designed to eat plastic, so comes in a metal tin, should only be used in a glass jar, and shouldn't be put down the drain. (and don't take it within a million miles of your paint or laquer either)

eats EVERYTHING off the chain though 🙂 new chain ahoy!

white spirit, diesel for a long soak. Kerosene is what is used in a proper degreasing bath.

buy one of these and you can just buy a gallon bottol for cheap nad it will last for ages.

Use dry lube; clean with warm water and Fairy liquid.

^ but doesn't fairy liquid have salt in it? That can't be good.

I like to use di-ethyl ether to degrease my chains, it makes the process so much more enjoyable (and flammable).

You're probably best off with a hydrocarbon solvent like those already mentioned, white spirit or kerosene etc. I've never degreased a chain in my life, but I imagine if you had a power link on it and just snapped it off and shook it in a jam jar of petrol that would do the trick.

You could try dichloromethane which is a superb solvent and used in a lot of degreasers, could probably get this from hardware stores. It's non-flammable, but quite volatile (bp 40 degrees IIRC) and probably not very good for you (no solvents are).

Kerosene = heating oil, about the cheapest degreaser there is at about 40p per litre. Helps if you, a friendly neighbour, or a family member use heating oil obviously.

DCM can also be used for extraction of psuedoephedrine if you need a sideline for paying for your bike habit.
