Hello, I'm helping my brother-in-law with some repairs to his commuting bike after the rear derailleur ended up in the spokes.

I wasn't sure how it happened as the story was I was just riding along... However after replacing the hanger and rear derailleur I went to fit the rear wheel and found that it was a bit of a mess. The QR skewer was significantly bent and the axle was broken in half, there was also significant deformation to one of the bolts.

The hub was a generic non-branded affair and the bike is a Carrera Crossfire. There seem to be plenty of axle replacement kits around for Shimano hubs from the likes of SJS, but I'm not sure what to buy for this hub - can anyone point me in the right direction?

Many thanks

It's a plain threaded spindle for a cup and cone hub.  Any Shimano quick-release spindle ought to fit, as long as it's the right length.  (Road and MTB are different lengths).

I would nip down to any bike shop with a workshop with the bits (even Halfords) and see what they can do.  Any hub that has cartridge bearings will not have a suitable axle.

The metal shields will tap off your old cones and can be reused which is why the axles shown on line don’t have them.

I’d guess the right hand shield is still under the free wheel if you’ve not removed it yet
