Hi off to the pryenees on saturday have a Garmin GPS 301, do I need to do anything to the settings for it work accuratly whilst over there?

If you're using it with a map then you need to change the datum to WGS84 and the grid system to whatever corresponds to your maps (probably UTM/UPS according to google for French maps).
not sure about that model but i have a garmin etrx vista hcx and i have to change some settings when abroad;
from the main menu page select "setup" and then "units"
highlight "position format" and press enter
scroll up and down the menu and select the correct setting (should be set to british grid if you are in the uk) for example "Swiss Grid" if you are going to Switzerland
you should probably check the "magnetic variation"
